B860 is Intel’s most interesting mainstream chipset for the current LGA1851 desktop platform.
It supports DDR5 memory overclocking and gives motherboard manufacturers enough high-speed I/O to build boards with PCIe 5.0 graphics, Gen5 NVMe, Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 7 and fast Ethernet without automatically moving into Z890 pricing.
What B860 does not give you is Intel’s official IA/CPU and BCLK overclocking support.
That makes the buying decision straightforward: if you want a well-equipped Core Ultra system but do not need Z890 CPU tuning, B860 is usually where I would start.

What B860 gives you — and what it does not
B860 is not simply an entry-level version of Z890.
Intel gives B860 a meaningful mainstream platform budget: up to 34 total platform PCIe lanes and up to 45 total platform high-speed I/O lanes.
Motherboard manufacturers can therefore build surprisingly sophisticated B860 boards.
The Tomahawk and Strix on this page are good examples. Both provide PCIe 5.0 graphics, Gen5 NVMe and Thunderbolt 4 despite using the mainstream chipset.
B860 supports memory overclocking
You can use XMP and tune DDR5 on B860.
You do not need Z890 simply because you bought a fast DDR5 kit.

Intel’s 800-series platform table lists memory overclocking on B860 but reserves IA and BCLK overclocking for Z890.

Buy B860 if…
You want a Core Ultra gaming or productivity system with XMP, modern storage, Thunderbolt and good networking but do not care about Intel’s CPU/BCLK overclocking controls.
Buy Z890 if…
CPU tuning, Intel 200S Boost, more PCIe devices or a significantly larger high-speed I/O configuration are genuine requirements.

The four B860 motherboard picks in detail
1. MSI MAG B860 TOMAHAWK WIFI
The B860 Tomahawk is the board I would use as the reference point for a mainstream LGA1851 build.
It is full-size ATX, gives you three M.2 positions and avoids making one of those slots unnecessarily slow.
The primary CPU-connected M.2 position operates at PCIe 5.0 x4, while the other two run through the B860 chipset at PCIe 4.0 x4.
That is enough onboard NVMe storage for the overwhelming majority of gaming and mixed-use systems.
Four SATA ports remain available as well.
Networking is one of the board’s better advantages: Intel Killer 5Gb Ethernet plus Wi-Fi 7.
Rear I/O includes one 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4 Type-C connection, four 10Gbps Type-A connections, another 10Gbps Type-C port, optical audio and several USB 2.0 connections for low-bandwidth peripherals.
MSI also provides Clear CMOS and Flash BIOS buttons plus four EZ Debug LEDs.
Those troubleshooting features are more useful than another oversized decorative heatsink when a new build refuses to POST.
Buy it if: you want a well-rounded ATX Core Ultra board with strong networking, Thunderbolt and three properly useful M.2 positions.
Skip it if: you specifically need a fourth onboard NVMe slot or intend to use Z890-only CPU tuning features.
2. ASUS ROG Strix B860-F Gaming WiFi
The Strix B860-F exists for the buyer who wants a feature-heavy B860 board rather than the cheapest way onto the chipset.
Storage is the clearest upgrade over the Tomahawk.
ASUS provides four M.2 positions: one PCIe 5.0 x4 slot, one Gen4 position supporting longer 22110 drives and another two Gen4 x4 slots.
Four SATA connections remain available.
That makes the Strix particularly attractive if you expect the system to accumulate several local NVMe drives over its lifetime.
Onboard audio is another genuine distinction. ASUS uses its SupremeFX implementation around the ALC4080 codec and a Savitech headphone amplifier.
If you connect analog headphones or powered speakers directly to the motherboard, that is more meaningful than it would be for somebody using USB audio or HDMI.
Rear connectivity includes Thunderbolt 4, a separate 20Gbps Type-C port, Wi-Fi 7, BIOS FlashBack and Clear CMOS.
The strange compromise is wired networking: the Strix uses 2.5GbE while the less expensive MSI Tomahawk provides 5GbE.
Buy it if: four M.2 slots and better onboard analog audio are more valuable to you than 5Gb Ethernet.
Skip it if: you only need two or three SSDs and prefer faster wired networking.
3. MSI PRO B860M-A WIFI
The PRO B860M-A is one of the more interesting B860 boards because MSI removes relatively little when moving to the less expensive Micro-ATX platform.
The primary graphics connection still runs at PCIe 5.0 x16.
Storage consists of three M.2 positions: one CPU-connected Gen5 x4 slot, one Gen4 x4 slot and a third connection running at up to Gen4 x2.
The board also keeps 5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7 and rear Thunderbolt 4.
That is an unusually strong connectivity combination for a mainstream Micro-ATX motherboard.
What you lose is mostly physical room and secondary I/O.
A large graphics card can cover more of the available expansion area on Micro-ATX, and the rear USB configuration is noticeably lighter than on the Tomahawk.
Audio is also the basic Realtek ALC897 implementation.
None of those compromises make the CPU slower. They simply tell you whether the cheaper layout fits your complete PC.
Buy it if: Micro-ATX fits the case, three SSDs are enough and you want to preserve more of the build budget for the CPU or graphics card.
Skip it if: you expect to add several expansion cards or need a large amount of rear USB connectivity.
4. GIGABYTE B860I AORUS PRO ICE
The B860I AORUS PRO ICE is the board for a very different type of buyer.
You should buy it because the PC is being designed around a compact Mini-ITX enclosure.
Within its 170mm-square footprint, GIGABYTE still provides a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics connection and two M.2 positions.
The front M.2 slot supports PCIe 5.0 x4, while the second drive sits on the back of the PCB and uses a Gen4 connection.
Rear connectivity includes Thunderbolt 4, three 10Gbps Type-A USB connections, two 5Gbps USB ports, 2.5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7.
GIGABYTE also includes Q-Flash Plus and its tool-free EZ-Latch mechanisms.
The compromises are exactly what you would expect from Mini-ITX: two DIMM slots, two M.2 positions, two SATA ports and one primary PCIe expansion slot.
Fan connectivity is also more limited simply because there is less board area available.
Those tradeoffs are completely acceptable in a small-form-factor PC and unnecessary in a full-size tower.
Buy it if: compact size is one of the defining goals of the system.
Skip it if: Micro-ATX or ATX fits your case and you want easier future RAM, storage and expansion upgrades.
What actually matters when choosing a B860 motherboard
1. Pick the form factor before comparing smaller specifications
ATX, Micro-ATX and Mini-ITX solve different physical problems.
If you have room for ATX and expect several expansion devices, a full-size board is easier to work with.
Micro-ATX can reduce both board and case cost without giving up four memory slots.
Mini-ITX makes sense only when reducing the physical size of the entire PC is part of the objective.
2. Three M.2 slots are enough for most builds
One Windows/application SSD, one large game or project drive and one spare position already provide a lot of storage flexibility.
That is why the Tomahawk and PRO B860M-A work well for mainstream systems.
The Strix B860-F’s fourth M.2 slot becomes useful when you know local storage expansion will be heavier.
3. Do not buy by the largest advertised DDR5 number
B860 allows memory overclocking and current motherboards advertise very high DDR5 OC frequencies.
Those specifications do not mean every CPU, kit and DIMM configuration will reach the same number.
Memory-controller quality, DIMM rank, capacity, BIOS support and the number of modules all matter.
Start with the capacity and stability you need rather than buying the board whose product page displays the largest MT/s figure.
4. Start with two DIMMs when possible
High DDR5 memory speeds are easier to achieve with one DIMM per channel than with four populated slots.
For a 32GB, 48GB, 64GB or 96GB configuration, a matched two-DIMM kit is normally the cleaner starting point.
5. Thunderbolt 4 is not restricted to expensive Z890 boards

B860 remains viable if you do not need CPU/BCLK overclocking. Compare Z890 if Intel 200S Boost or manual tuning is important.

Another sensible B860 pairing for stock-clock builds where memory, storage and connectivity matter more than CPU overclocking.
