AMD B840 is the entry point into the current 800-series AM5 platform, but its limitations are important to understand before choosing a board.
You still get DDR5, AMD EXPO memory overclocking and support for current AM5 Ryzen processors. What you do not get from the B840 platform is PCIe 5.0 or AMD-supported Ryzen CPU overclocking.
That makes B840 most attractive when the motherboard is meaningfully cheaper than a B850 alternative and your build is straightforward: one graphics card, a few SSDs, normal networking and no need for CPU overclocking.

What exactly is AMD B840?
B840 sits below B850 in AMD’s current AM5 chipset family.
AMD gives the platform 34 usable PCIe lanes in total, but none of those are PCIe 5.0 lanes.
With a Ryzen 9000 or Ryzen 7000 desktop CPU, the normal platform baseline is therefore a PCIe 4.0 x16 graphics connection and PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe.
B840 also does not enable AMD’s Ryzen processor overclocking support.
Memory is different: DDR5 overclocking and AMD EXPO remain supported.
B840 does not mean slow memory
You can still use compatible EXPO memory kits and tune DDR5. The chipset restriction applies to Ryzen processor overclocking, not to AMD EXPO memory overclocking.
B840 has no PCIe 5.0 lanes
This is one of the clearest differences versus B850.
If a Gen5 NVMe drive or PCIe 5.0 platform connectivity is part of your buying plan, skip B840 and start with B850.

Buy B840 if…
The board is clearly cheaper, PCIe 4.0 is enough, you do not need Ryzen CPU overclocking and the storage/I/O layout already covers the complete build.
Buy B850 if…
You want Gen5 NVMe, Ryzen CPU overclocking, more high-speed I/O or the B850 board costs only modestly more.

The three B840 motherboard picks in detail
1. MSI B840 GAMING PLUS WIFI
If I were intentionally building around B840 rather than simply buying whichever AM5 board was cheapest, this is the first ATX model I would check.
MSI gives you a conventional full-size layout, four DDR5 DIMM slots and a PCIe 4.0 x16 graphics connection with Ryzen 9000 and 7000 CPUs.
The storage layout is simple but useful. Both M.2 positions connect through the CPU and can operate at PCIe 4.0 x4 with the appropriate Ryzen processor.
Four SATA connectors remain available if you need more inexpensive bulk storage.
Networking is one of the board’s stronger points: 2.5Gb Ethernet plus full Wi-Fi 7.
MSI also provides rear 10Gbps USB, front USB-C, a pre-installed I/O shield, Clear CMOS and Flash BIOS buttons plus EZ Debug LEDs.
Those practical build features are why I prefer it to chasing the largest advertised power-stage count on an entry-level chipset.
Buy it if: you want a conventional ATX gaming PC, two NVMe drives are enough and Wi-Fi 7 is useful.
Skip it if: you expect to install three or more NVMe drives or a nearby B850 board costs only a little more.
2. ASUS PRIME B840-PLUS WIFI
The Prime B840-PLUS solves the main weakness of the MSI: onboard storage expansion.
ASUS gives you three M.2 positions rather than two.
With a Ryzen 9000 or 7000 CPU, the first two positions operate at PCIe 4.0 x4. The third comes through the B840 chipset and runs at PCIe 3.0 x4.
That third slot is not particularly exciting for a new flagship SSD, but it is completely useful for an inexpensive secondary storage drive.
You also get four SATA connections.
Networking is Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6E rather than MSI’s newer Wi-Fi 7 implementation.
Rear connectivity includes eight USB ports, including 10Gbps Type-A and Type-C connections.
ASUS also includes BIOS FlashBack and a pre-mounted I/O shield.
The large number of physical PCIe slots may look impressive, but remember that the lower slots are chipset-connected PCIe 3.0 connections and some share bandwidth.
Buy it if: you want B840 but know you will use three onboard NVMe drives.
Skip it if: its current price moves close to a B850 board with Gen5 NVMe and CPU-overclocking support.
3. GIGABYTE B840M AORUS ELITE WIFI6E
The B840M AORUS Elite is my preferred direction when the case calls for Micro-ATX.
It retains four memory slots rather than reducing the system to the two-DIMM layout found on some smaller budget boards.
Storage consists of two CPU-connected M.2 positions. With Ryzen 9000 or 7000, both can operate with PCIe 4.0 connectivity, although the exact lane width varies with the processor and slot.
Four SATA ports remain available.
Wired networking is 2.5Gb Ethernet, wireless is Wi-Fi 6E, and GIGABYTE includes a useful set of DIY features such as M.2 EZ-Latch, PCIe EZ-Latch and Q-Flash Plus.
The rear USB selection is more modest than the full-size boards. The rear Type-C port is 5Gbps, while one Type-A connection runs at 10Gbps.
That is enough for ordinary gaming peripherals, but users with fast external SSDs should pay attention to the port speeds rather than simply seeing “USB-C” and assuming it is the fastest connection.
Buy it if: you want a compact Micro-ATX AM5 system without sacrificing four DDR5 DIMM slots.
Skip it if: you need three or more onboard M.2 drives or lots of fast rear USB.
What actually matters when choosing a B840 motherboard
1. Make sure B840 is genuinely saving you money
This is the first thing I would check.
B840 gives up PCIe 5.0, Ryzen processor overclocking and part of the high-speed I/O budget available on B850.
Those compromises are reasonable when they produce a clearly less expensive system.
They become much harder to justify when a well-equipped B850 board is sitting nearby at a similar current price.
2. PCIe 4.0 is still completely usable
A PCIe 4.0 x16 graphics connection does not make B840 an obsolete gaming platform.
The important point is simply that B840 does not give you the PCIe 5.0 headroom available higher in AMD’s stack.
If you are building a cost-conscious PC today rather than paying specifically for future expansion, PCIe 4.0 may be entirely adequate.
3. Do not buy a Gen5 SSD for a B840 board
B840 provides no PCIe 5.0 lanes.
A PCIe 5.0 NVMe drive may be backward-compatible, but it cannot operate at Gen5 speed on this platform.
If Gen5 SSD performance is part of your plan, buy B850 instead.
4. EXPO memory still works
AMD specifically enables DDR5 memory overclocking on B840.
That means a B840 build can still use compatible AMD EXPO memory profiles.
As always, actual memory stability depends on the CPU, DIMM kit, capacity, ranks and BIOS.
5. Two M.2 drives may be enough
One OS/application SSD and one large game/storage SSD cover a large percentage of mainstream PCs.
If that describes your build, the MSI and GIGABYTE layouts are not necessarily limiting.
If you already know you want three local NVMe drives, choose the ASUS or move into B850.
6. Wi-Fi 7 is not automatically worth more than Wi-Fi 6E
The MSI provides Wi-Fi 7 while the ASUS and GIGABYTE use Wi-Fi 6E.
Your router and local wireless environment determine how much that difference matters.
Do not give up a motherboard feature you actually need just to obtain a newer Wi-Fi number that the rest of your network cannot use.
7. BIOS Flashback is worth having
AM5 is a long-lived socket, and future CPU support can depend on firmware updates.
A BIOS Flashback-style feature can update firmware without requiring an already-supported processor to boot first.
All three recommendations provide an equivalent recovery/update mechanism.
8. Do not rank these boards by VRM numbers alone
Power delivery still has to be appropriate for the processor.
But B840’s strongest use case is a sensible, stock-clock AM5 build.
Once the motherboard can reliably power your chosen Ryzen processor, storage, USB, networking and form factor are more useful comparison points than simply counting phases.
Which Ryzen CPUs make the most sense with B840?
Ryzen 5 builds
This is the easiest B840 pairing to justify. A mainstream Ryzen 5, one GPU and two SSDs align well with the chipset’s cost-focused feature set.
Ryzen 7 builds
Still perfectly reasonable when you do not need CPU overclocking, Gen5 storage or unusually heavy expansion.
Ryzen X3D gaming builds
Technically possible on compatible boards, but compare B850 pricing. With an expensive X3D CPU, the additional B850 platform features often become easier to justify.
Ryzen 9 workstation builds
I would usually start higher in the chipset range. A 16-core workstation is more likely to benefit from extra storage, I/O, PCIe and tuning flexibility.
Other B840 motherboards worth considering
ASUS PRIME B840M-A WIFI
The interesting alternative if you want Micro-ATX but need three M.2 slots rather than the two on the AORUS Elite.
It also provides 2.5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E and BIOS FlashBack.
ASUS B840M AYW GAMING WIFI
A simpler gaming-oriented Micro-ATX option with dual Gen4 M.2, 2.5GbE and Wi-Fi 6.
The main limitation is its two-DIMM memory layout, so I would compare it carefully with four-DIMM alternatives.
ASRock B840M-C
A very basic alternative with BIOS Flashback and Wi-Fi 6.
Its Gigabit Ethernet and slower secondary M.2 implementation make it a board I would consider only when its price is genuinely low.
What I would avoid
Do not buy an expensive B840 motherboard just because it looks premium
The chipset still has the same fundamental platform limits: no PCIe 5.0 lanes and no Ryzen CPU overclocking.
Once the price approaches a competent B850 board, the reason for choosing B840 starts disappearing.
B840 makes the most sense when it saves money without removing a feature your particular build needs.
