Spending close to $300 on an X870 motherboard does not mean you should buy whichever model has the longest specification sheet.
Almost every serious X870 board can advertise AM5, DDR5, PCIe 5.0, USB4 and Wi-Fi 7. The differences that actually affect ownership are how the PCIe lanes are divided, what happens when several M.2 slots are populated, networking speed, rear I/O, BIOS recovery and how easy the board is to build with.
None of these boards makes the same Ryzen CPU meaningfully faster in games simply because one costs more.

1. MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi
The Tomahawk remains my default because none of its compromises forces most normal builders to redesign the system around the motherboard.
MSI uses a 14+2+1 design with 80A smart power stages and an 8-layer PCB. Independent testing has shown the VRM running comfortably even with a Ryzen 9-class sustained load, so there is no practical reason to buy a more expensive board purely for a larger VRM number.
Storage consists of four onboard M.2 positions. With Ryzen 7000 or 9000, M2_1 and M2_2 can both operate at PCIe 5.0 x4. M2_4 is Gen4 x4, while M2_3 is Gen4 x2.
Networking is unusually strong for this class: 5Gb Ethernet plus Wi-Fi 7. You also get dual rear 40Gbps USB4, ALC4080 audio, Flash BIOS, rear Clear CMOS, EZ Debug LEDs and MSI’s tool-less M.2 and GPU-release hardware.
The M2_2 / USB4 rule
M2_2 and the rear USB4 controller share one CPU PCIe link. Install an SSD in M2_2 and MSI splits the connection so both sides operate with reduced lane width.
Force M2_2 to full x4 operation in BIOS and the rear USB4 ports are disabled. If you need full-speed USB4, put the primary Gen5 SSD in M2_1.
Buy it if: you want the most balanced mix of USB4, storage, networking, audio and build convenience.
Skip it if: you only need one or two SSDs and 2.5GbE, because the Pro RS can cover that simpler build for less.
2. ASRock X870 Pro RS WiFi
The Pro RS is the board for somebody who wants the X870 feature floor without paying for networking and storage they will never use.
You still get PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics with Ryzen 7000/9000, one Gen5 x4 M.2 slot, another Gen4 x4 slot and a third Gen3 x4/SATA-capable M.2 position.
There are also four conventional SATA ports, dual 40Gbps USB4, Wi-Fi 7, 2.5Gb Ethernet, ALC1220 audio and BIOS Flashback.
ASRock uses a 14+2+1 80A power design, and independent testing measured excellent VRM thermals under Ryzen 9 load. That makes the board far more capable than its value positioning suggests.
Pro RS or LiveMixer?
This decision has become more interesting because current pricing can put the LiveMixer surprisingly close to the Pro RS.
If they are close when you buy and you can use 5GbE, four M.2 slots and more USB, the LiveMixer gives you considerably more hardware. Choose the Pro RS when simplicity and the lowest sensible X870 spend are the priority.
Buy it if: you need dual USB4, Wi-Fi 7 and one Gen5 SSD but do not need 5Gb networking or four fast NVMe drives.
Skip it if: the LiveMixer is almost the same price and its extra I/O would actually be useful.
3. ASUS TUF Gaming X870-Plus WiFi
The TUF is the board I would look at when the system is built around a Ryzen 9 and the processor will spend real time rendering, compiling, encoding or doing other sustained all-core work.
ASUS uses a 16+2+1 arrangement with 80A power stages and large VRM heatsinks. Independent testing has also shown the board staying comfortably cool with a high-power Ryzen 9 workload.
You get four M.2 positions, including two CPU-connected Gen5 x4 slots with Ryzen 7000/9000, dual rear USB4, Wi-Fi 7, 2.5Gb Ethernet and ALC1220P audio.
ASUS also provides BIOS FlashBack, Q-LED diagnostics, M.2 Q-Latch and PCIe Slot Q-Release. Those troubleshooting and maintenance features are genuinely useful on a workstation you expect to keep upgrading.
The second Gen5 M.2 uses GPU lanes
The primary PCIe 5.0 graphics slot shares bandwidth with M2_2. When M2_2 is active, the graphics slot runs at x8 rather than x16.
For most current GPUs that is unlikely to be a dramatic real-world problem, but it is unnecessary if your storage plan can use M2_1 plus the chipset-connected Gen4 positions instead.
Buy it if: you are building around a Ryzen 9, value the stronger CPU power layout and want four-drive storage flexibility.
Skip it if: you only have a Ryzen 7/X3D gaming workload and the Tomahawk or Pro RS already provides everything you need.
4. ASRock X870 LiveMixer WiFi
The LiveMixer is not really a cheaper version of the Tomahawk. It solves a different problem.
If your desk has external drives, an audio interface, capture hardware, a webcam, a Stream Deck, controllers and several other USB devices, the LiveMixer’s I/O can eliminate an entire layer of external hubs.
It provides dual USB4, 5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7, ALC4082 audio and four M.2 connections: two Gen5 x4 plus two Gen4 x4.
The board’s rear panel exposes an unusually large number of physical USB connections, although several are USB 2.0 and should be used for low-bandwidth devices rather than fast external storage.
The newer 2026 TechSpot testing measured the LiveMixer at only 59°C during its Ryzen 9 VRM stress test, so its value positioning does not mean weak CPU power delivery.
Read the M2_2 rule before buying it for USB4
Install an SSD in the second Gen5 M.2 position and M2_2 plus the two rear USB4 ports share bandwidth.
Force M2_2 back to full x4 bandwidth in BIOS and the rear USB4 ports are disabled. If your creator workflow depends on USB4, plan the drive layout before filling every socket.
Buy it if: you have lots of USB devices, want 5GbE, need four M.2 drives or use the PC for streaming/content creation.
Skip it if: you only connect a keyboard, mouse and one or two drives. The extra I/O will sit unused.
Newer 2026 alternative: ASRock X870 Nova WiFi
Potential upgrade if you want more storage
The X870 Nova WiFi arrived after the original four-board shortlist and is one of the strongest newer X870 options below the $300 ceiling.
It combines an 18+2+1 80A power design, 5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7, ALC4082 audio, dual USB4 and five onboard M.2 slots.
Two of those M.2 positions can run at Gen5 x4 with Ryzen 7000/9000, two are Gen4 x4, and the fifth can handle PCIe Gen3/SATA storage.
The same warning applies, however: M2_2 shares bandwidth with the rear USB4 controller. Populate it and both sides run at reduced width; force M2_2 to x4 and USB4 is disabled.
If its current price is close to the Tomahawk, the Nova offers more storage expansion on paper. I would still choose the MSI as the simpler default, but the Nova deserves comparison for a storage-heavy build.

When you should not buy X870
Some readers searching for the best X870 board should actually buy B850.
X870 makes sense when…
- You genuinely use USB4.
- You want the stronger I/O packages common on X870.
- You need several NVMe drives.
- 5GbE or richer networking matters.
- You want more room for future expansion.
B850 makes more sense when…
- The PC is primarily for gaming.
- You use one GPU and one or two SSDs.
- You do not own a USB4 device.
- 2.5GbE is already more than enough.
- The saved money can improve the GPU or CPU.
The chipset itself is not a frame-rate upgrade. If a B850 board runs the same CPU, RAM and GPU at the same settings, moving to X870 does not magically increase gaming performance.
Why lane sharing matters more than the number of M.2 slots
Motherboard advertising tells you how many slots exist. The manual tells you what happens when you use all of them.
MSI Tomahawk
M2_2 shares bandwidth with USB4. Give M2_2 full x4 and USB4 turns off.
ASUS TUF
M2_2 shares the CPU graphics lanes. Use it and the main GPU slot runs at x8.
ASRock LiveMixer
M2_2 shares with USB4. Full x4 SSD operation disables rear USB4.
This is why I would rather own four intelligently usable M.2 positions than five sockets whose bandwidth conflicts with the exact devices I intend to run.
Ryzen 8000 changes some of the PCIe rules
Do not read an X870 specification sheet and assume every Ryzen processor uses the board in exactly the same way.
With Ryzen 7000 and 9000 desktop CPUs, the main GPU slot on these boards can normally operate at PCIe 5.0 x16.
Ryzen 8000 APUs expose a different lane configuration. Depending on the exact processor, the graphics slot can drop to PCIe 4.0 x8 or x4, and some secondary CPU-connected M.2 slots can become unavailable.
Check the CPU footnote if you are using a Ryzen 8000 APU
The motherboard chipset does not create additional CPU PCIe lanes. The processor installed determines what several of the fastest slots can actually do.
Do you need two Gen5 SSDs?
Probably not for a gaming PC.
A Gen5 M.2 slot is useful platform headroom, but a high-quality Gen4 NVMe drive remains extremely fast for Windows, games and ordinary applications.
The reason to care about two Gen5 positions is a workload that actually moves enough data to benefit from them—not simply because two Gen5 logos look better on the specification sheet.
This is especially important on the Tomahawk, TUF and LiveMixer, where using a second high-speed slot can affect another connection.
2.5GbE vs 5GbE
The MSI Tomahawk and LiveMixer provide 5Gb Ethernet. The Pro RS and TUF use 2.5GbE.
That does not make 5GbE automatically better for gaming. Online-game latency is not reduced simply by changing a local Ethernet port from 2.5Gbps to 5Gbps.
5GbE becomes useful when the rest of your network can actually use it: for example a matching switch and a fast NAS or workstation transferring large files locally.
If your internet connection and home network remain at gigabit speeds, 2.5GbE already leaves substantial headroom.
Do not buy by VRM phase count alone
The four main boards here all have sufficient CPU power delivery for normal Ryzen operation.
Independent stress testing reinforces that point: the original X870 roundup measured the Pro RS, Tomahawk and TUF in the low-to-mid-50°C range under sustained Ryzen 9 load, and the newer LiveMixer measured 59°C in the expanded 2026 testing.
Those are all comfortable results.
Spend for workload, not bragging rights
The ASUS TUF earns the Ryzen 9 recommendation because its complete power/cooling and workstation-oriented package is strong—not because a larger phase number makes games faster.
BIOS recovery is worth having
AM5 supports multiple processor generations, so a board can sometimes need a firmware update before a newly released CPU behaves correctly.
Flashback-style recovery also helps when the system refuses to POST after a bad configuration.
The recommended boards include BIOS recovery features that can be used without relying on a fully working operating system. That is much more useful over several years of ownership than many decorative motherboard features.
A balanced note on the ASRock AM5 history
ASRock’s current X870 boards offer exceptional hardware for the money, but the 2025 Ryzen 7 9800X3D reports should not simply be erased from the buying discussion.
Independent reporting found ASRock boards disproportionately represented among user-submitted X3D failure and boot-problem reports. That did not establish that every ASRock motherboard was defective, and some apparently failed systems were recoverable firmware/boot problems.
ASRock has continued updating these boards through 2026 with newer AGESA firmware.
How I would set up a new ASRock X3D build
- Check the support page for the exact motherboard.
- Choose an appropriate current stable BIOS for your CPU.
- Validate the machine at default settings.
- Enable EXPO only after the system is stable.
- Retest memory stability.
- Add PBO or Curve Optimizer changes separately.
That is a reason for careful setup, not a claim that every current ASRock X870 board is defective.
What to avoid
- Buying X870 just for the chipset name. A good B850 board may suit a simple gaming build better.
- Counting M.2 slots without reading the bandwidth table. The second Gen5 slot can steal bandwidth from USB4 or the GPU.
- Buying the cheapest socket-compatible board for a sustained Ryzen 9 workload. Compatibility and ideal pairing are different questions.
- Assuming 5GbE improves gaming latency. Your entire network needs to use the bandwidth.
- Buying Gen5 SSDs just because the slots support them. Capacity can be a better gaming upgrade.
- Ignoring Ryzen 8000 lane differences. The CPU can change GPU and M.2 behavior.
- Changing EXPO, PBO and Curve Optimizer together on the first boot. Establish a stable baseline first.
