B850 sounds like a full generation ahead of B650.
At chipset level, the difference is much smaller than that name suggests.
Both are mainstream AM5 platforms. Both support Ryzen processor overclocking. Both support DDR5 memory tuning through AMD EXPO. Both provide the same broad 36-lane platform class.
And AMD’s baseline graphics specification for both is PCIe 4.0 x16 or x8/x8.
The one clear guaranteed generational upgrade is storage:
B850 guarantees PCIe 5.0 x4 for the primary NVMe connection.
On B650, PCIe 5.0 NVMe support was optional. Some B650 boards have it. Others stop at Gen4.
That makes this less of a “new chipset vs old chipset” decision and much more of a specific motherboard vs specific motherboard decision.

AMD’s current AM5 chipset table lists B850 with:
- 36 usable PCIe lanes,
- four mandatory usable PCIe 5.0 lanes,
- PCIe 5.0 x4 NVMe,
- Ryzen CPU overclocking,
- DDR5/EXPO overclocking,
- up to six USB 10Gbps connections,
- one USB 20Gbps connection,
- and up to four SATA or PCIe 3.0 connections.
The corresponding B650 platform retained the same general lane, USB, SATA and overclocking allocation, but made Gen5 storage optional rather than mandatory.
The chipset badge is only the baseline
A motherboard manufacturer can build substantially more functionality around that baseline.
That is why you can find a B850 board with:
- PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics,
- two Gen5 M.2 slots,
- 5Gb Ethernet,
- Wi-Fi 7,
- four M.2 positions,
- and premium audio,
while another B850 board may expose far less.
The same principle applies to B650.
B850 does not automatically give you PCIe 5.0 graphics
This is probably the most common specification mistake in this comparison.
AMD’s current B850 baseline lists the main graphics connection as PCIe 4.0 x16 or two PCIe 4.0 x8 links.
But some actual B850 motherboards route the compatible Ryzen processor’s Gen5 graphics lanes to the main slot.
For example, the MSI PRO B850M-A WiFi provides:
- PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics with Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 9000 CPUs,
- PCIe 4.0 x8 with Ryzen 8700/8600/8400-series processors,
- and PCIe 4.0 x4 with Ryzen 8500/8300-series processors.
So the correct question is not:
“Does B850 have Gen5 graphics?”
It is:
“Does this exact motherboard expose Gen5 graphics with my exact CPU?”
Your Ryzen CPU can change the motherboard’s PCIe capabilities
The motherboard chipset is only one part of AM5’s I/O design.
A large portion of the fast PCIe connectivity comes directly from the processor.
That means plugging a different Ryzen family into the same board can change:
- GPU link width,
- GPU PCIe generation,
- M.2 speed,
- and whether some CPU-connected slots are available at all.
The same MSI B850M-A example gives the primary M.2 slot PCIe 5.0 x4 with Ryzen 7000/9000, but only PCIe 4.0 x4 with Ryzen 8000 processors.
Do not shop from the chipset table alone
If you are using an 8000-series desktop APU, check the motherboard specification page with that processor family selected.
The big “PCIe 5.0” label on the box may describe capability that a particular CPU cannot expose.
Does B850 increase gaming performance?
Not because it is B850.
The motherboard chipset does not render frames.
With the same:
- Ryzen CPU,
- graphics card,
- DDR5 configuration,
- BIOS settings,
- and a motherboard whose VRM is already adequate,
moving from B650 to B850 does not create a meaningful inherent gaming-performance upgrade.
The money is normally buying connectivity and layout: newer storage, networking, additional M.2 positions, better rear I/O, tool-less hardware, or a different lane map.

PCIe 5.0 SSDs: the one guaranteed B850 advantage
B850 guarantees that the primary NVMe path can operate at PCIe 5.0 x4 with a compatible processor.
B650 does not.
That sounds like a large gaming upgrade because a flagship Gen5 SSD can advertise far higher sequential read speeds than a Gen4 drive.
Actual games rarely behave like a sequential-storage benchmark.
Game loading changes much less than the SSD specification sheet
TechSpot tested PCIe 5.0, PCIe 4.0, PCIe 3.0, SATA SSDs and hard drives across a broad collection of modern games.
In Black Myth: Wukong , moving all the way from a PCIe 3.0 QLC SSD to a PCIe 5.0 TLC drive reduced initial load time by only about 10%.
Across many of the other titles, the difference between PCIe NVMe generations was even smaller.
TechSpot’s overall advice for gaming was essentially: buy an NVMe SSD; after that, PCIe generation usually matters much less than marketing would suggest.
Tom’s Hardware reached a similar conclusion in its 2026 11-game storage test .
Where Gen5 storage really earns its money
PCIe 5.0 becomes much easier to justify for:
- large sustained file transfers,
- high-resolution video workflows,
- large project caches,
- dataset work,
- scratch disks,
- and other storage-heavy professional workloads.
The Gen5 SSD rule
Do not pay a large motherboard or SSD premium for Gen5 storage unless you can name the workload that needs the additional throughput.
For a normal gaming PC, a good Gen4 SSD remains an excellent choice.
VRM quality: B850 is not automatically stronger
A chipset name does not specify the motherboard’s complete VRM.
That is one of the best reasons to compare actual boards rather than buying by B650/B850 alone.
The MSI Tomahawk pair demonstrates this perfectly.
MSI specifies both the MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi and MAG B850 Tomahawk MAX WiFi with:
- 14+2+1 power phases,
- 80A Vcore smart power stages,
- dual 8-pin CPU power connections,
- and large VRM heatsinks.
So paying extra for the B850 Tomahawk is not buying a dramatically stronger CPU power system.
It is mainly buying newer expansion and I/O.
Lane sharing matters more than the number of slots
Motherboard product pages like to count connectors.
You should care about how many can operate simultaneously at useful bandwidth.
B650 Tomahawk
The B650 Tomahawk has:
- three PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slots,
- six SATA ports,
- and a lower PCIe 4.0 x2 expansion slot.
M2_3 and the lower PCI_E2 connection share bandwidth.
When both contain devices, MSI specifies that each runs at x2.
B850 Tomahawk MAX
The newer board provides:
- M2_1 PCIe 5.0 x4,
- M2_2 PCIe 5.0 x4 with Ryzen 7000/9000,
- M2_3 PCIe 4.0 x2,
- M2_4 PCIe 4.0 x4,
- and four SATA ports.
On this board, M2_3 shares with the lower PCIe slot.
When M2_3 is occupied, the lower expansion slot runs at x2. MSI lets you switch that lower slot to x4 in BIOS, but doing so disables M2_3.
Neither of those sharing arrangements cuts the primary GPU slot on these examples.
Always read the lane-sharing footnotes
“Four M.2 slots” does not necessarily mean four M.2 SSDs plus every PCIe expansion card can all operate at their maximum link simultaneously.
The footnotes are often more important than the connector count.
Networking: B850 doesn’t guarantee Wi-Fi 7 or 5GbE
Newer B850 boards often come with newer networking because they were designed later.
That is a market trend, not a chipset guarantee.

That ASUS example is useful: even an expensive B850 board can still use 2.5Gb Ethernet.
If you specifically need 5GbE, read the networking line on the exact board.
B650 vs B850 pricing: use a percentage, not a fixed dollar rule
The correct answer can flip between countries and between sales.
A recent U.S. snapshot illustrates the problem.
MSI Tomahawk
Recent price tracking put the B650 Tomahawk around $170–176 , while the B850 Tomahawk MAX was around $210 .
At $170 versus $210, the B850 costs about:
(210 − 170) ÷ 170 × 100 ≈ 24% more.
For a pure gaming PC that does not need Gen5 storage, 5GbE, Wi-Fi 7 or the fourth M.2 slot, I would take the B650 board at that gap.
MSI PRO micro-ATX
The situation flips at the cheaper end.
The PRO B850M-A WiFi recently reached $139.99 .
Meanwhile, remaining PRO B650M-A WiFi listings were around $157–160 and frequently out of stock .
There is no reason to pay more for the older board there.
My B650 vs B850 price rule
B850 costs the same or less: buy B850.
B850 costs 0–10% more: I would usually buy B850 for a new system.
B850 costs 10–20% more: compare the exact features you will use.
B850 costs more than 20% extra: a proven B650 board becomes very attractive if it already has the expansion, networking and firmware features you need.
1. MSI PRO B850M-A WiFi — best budget / micro-ATX choice
This is the board that makes the strongest case against automatically hunting for old B650 stock.
MSI’s official specification gives you:
- micro-ATX form factor,
- 8+2+1 power with 60A Vcore stages,
- PCIe 5.0 x16 with Ryzen 7000/9000,
- one PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot,
- one PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 slot,
- four SATA ports,
- 5Gb Ethernet,
- Wi-Fi 7,
- Clear CMOS,
- and Flash BIOS.
Compare it with the PRO B650M-A WiFi
The older B650M-A also gives you two M.2 positions, four SATA ports and Flash BIOS.
But its differences include:
- PCIe 4.0 rather than Gen5 graphics routing,
- two Gen4 M.2 connections rather than a Gen5 primary slot,
- 2.5Gb Ethernet rather than 5Gb,
- and Wi-Fi 6E rather than Wi-Fi 7.
Those upgrades are not worth an unlimited premium.
But when the newer B850M-A is currently the same price—or even cheaper—the comparison becomes simple.
Buy the B850M-A unless…
The B650M-A appears in a genuine clearance sale that puts it meaningfully below the B850 model.
2. MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk MAX WiFi — best mainstream B850
For a higher-end gaming system, this is a much better illustration of what B850 can actually add than simply reading AMD’s chipset table.
MSI specifies:
- 14+2+1 power with 80A Vcore stages,
- PCIe 5.0 x16 with compatible Ryzen CPUs,
- four M.2 positions,
- two CPU-connected Gen5 x4 M.2 positions with Ryzen 7000/9000,
- 5Gb Ethernet,
- Wi-Fi 7,
- ALC4080 audio,
- Flash BIOS,
- and Clear CMOS.
This is why B850 can be worth paying more for
The extra value is not more frame rate.
It is the combination of:
- more storage expansion,
- Gen5 storage,
- Gen5 graphics routing,
- newer networking,
- and improved DIY features.
If you expect to keep the motherboard through several AM5 CPU upgrades, those can be useful quality-of-life advantages.
But the B650 Tomahawk can beat it on value
The old board has essentially the same 14+2+1 / 80A Vcore power configuration.
So if you do not need the B850 model’s newer I/O and the older board is 20–25% cheaper, the B650 Tomahawk remains a very smart gaming-board purchase.
3. MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi — best discounted B650
This is the B650 board that most clearly demonstrates why “older chipset” does not mean “bad motherboard.”
Its current specification still includes:
- 14+2+1 / 80A CPU power delivery,
- three PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 connections,
- six SATA ports,
- 2.5Gb Ethernet,
- Wi-Fi 6E,
- Realtek ALC4080 audio,
- 20Gbps rear USB-C,
- and a Flash BIOS button.
For a one-GPU gaming build using one or two Gen4 SSDs, that specification is still difficult to call inadequate.
B650 actually wins on SATA count here
The B650 Tomahawk gives you six SATA ports.
The B850 Tomahawk MAX provides four.
So even within the same product family, the newer board is not automatically superior in every category.
Buy this board because of the discount—not nostalgia
If a B850 Tomahawk is only 5–10% more, I would buy the newer model.
If the B650 is 20%+ cheaper and its I/O already covers the finished PC, saving the money is entirely reasonable.
4. ASUS ROG Strix B850-F Gaming WiFi — best storage / rear-I/O step-up
This is where buying the exact feature set becomes more important than buying a chipset label.
ASUS equips the ROG Strix B850-F Gaming WiFi with:
- 16+2+2 80A power stages,
- PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics with compatible Ryzen CPUs,
- four M.2 positions,
- two PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 positions,
- two PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 positions,
- 12 rear USB ports,
- Wi-Fi 7,
- ALC4080 audio with a Savitech amplifier,
- BIOS FlashBack,
- and Clear CMOS.
It also has very real tradeoffs
You get only two SATA ports.
Networking is 2.5GbE, not the 5GbE found on the cheaper B850 Tomahawk and B850M-A.
And M2_3 shares bandwidth with the lower PCIe 4.0 x4 physical slot: using that expansion slot disables M2_3.
Price is critical
Recent tracking has shown this board moving between roughly $210 during a strong sale and roughly $280–300 at other retailers .
At around $210, the storage, rear USB and audio package is compelling.

Do older B650 boards need a BIOS update for Ryzen 9000?
Potentially, yes.
AMD’s current AM5 compatibility guidance says 600- and 800-series AM5 motherboards support current AM5 processors, but a BIOS update may be required for Ryzen 8000 and Ryzen 9000 CPUs on 600-series boards.
That makes BIOS Flashback particularly valuable when buying older B650 inventory.
Flashback lets you update compatible firmware from USB without first needing an older supported CPU installed.
Old stock is the real B650 compatibility trap
The chipset is not incompatible with Ryzen 9000.
The problem is that a motherboard manufactured or boxed long before your CPU may contain old firmware.
Before buying B650 for a newer Ryzen processor, check:
- the manufacturer’s CPU-support list,
- the required BIOS version,
- and whether the board supports BIOS Flashback without a working CPU.
Is B650 a dead platform?
No.
AMD confirmed in 2025 that it was working with channel partners to transition the mainstream channel from B650 toward B850 .
Later reports claimed motherboard vendors could continue or restart B650 production because higher memory prices and weak DIY demand had changed the economics.
Those later production claims were reported as rumors rather than a new formal AMD platform announcement .
You do not actually need to predict the B650 production schedule to make a buying decision.
The board either:
- exists at a good price,
- supports your CPU,
- has the required connections,
- and has current BIOS support,
or it doesn’t.
AM5 itself now has support through 2029
This is much more important than whether AMD keeps making new B650 chipset stock.
At Computex 2026, AMD officially extended Socket AM5 support through 2029 .
That does not guarantee that every motherboard ever released will receive firmware for every future AM5 CPU.
Board-vendor firmware support still matters.
But a good B650 motherboard does not become obsolete simply because B850 exists.
Should existing B650 owners upgrade to B850?
For most people: no.
If your current B650 motherboard:
- supports your CPU,
- runs your DDR5 correctly,
- has enough M.2 storage,
- has enough USB,
- has the networking you need,
- and has adequate VRM cooling,
then replacing it with B850 will usually produce very little practical benefit.
Reasons an upgrade could make sense
- you specifically need more M.2 slots,
- you need guaranteed Gen5 NVMe,
- you want 5GbE or newer Wi-Fi,
- you need a different expansion layout,
- the old board has a hardware problem,
- or you are rebuilding the PC for unrelated reasons.
Do not replace a good motherboard for a chipset badge
A motherboard upgrade is one of the least attractive ways to spend money when the existing board already supports the CPU, GPU, memory and storage configuration you want.
Which chipset for an X3D gaming build?
A Ryzen 7 X3D processor does not inherently require B850, X870 or X870E.
The motherboard needs:
- firmware support for the processor,
- adequate VRM capability,
- stable DDR5 support,
- and the I/O required by the rest of the build.
A good B650 Tomahawk can power a high-end X3D gaming system perfectly well.
A B850 Tomahawk becomes preferable when its newer storage, networking and expansion are worth the additional price.
Which chipset for creators?
This is where B850 becomes easier to justify.
Creator systems are more likely to benefit from:
- multiple fast M.2 SSDs,
- large sequential file transfers,
- 5Gb networking,
- higher-speed external I/O,
- and additional storage expansion.
But B850 still does not guarantee every creator feature.
If USB4 is a hard requirement, look at the exact board or move up to X870, where AMD makes USB4 part of the platform baseline.

What about B650E?
Do not confuse B650 with B650E.
B650E is the more feature-rich 600-series variant and guarantees substantially more Gen5 connectivity than ordinary B650.
A discounted high-quality B650E motherboard can therefore be more attractive than a basic B850 board.
Again, the correct comparison is:
exact board vs exact board at today’s price.
What about X670?
X670 provides a larger total I/O budget than B650/B850, but older high-end boards can now have unusual clearance pricing.

B650 vs B850 decision in 30 seconds
Buy B850
You get the newer platform baseline, guaranteed Gen5 NVMe and usually more modern board designs without paying much extra.
Buy the good B650
If it has strong power delivery, BIOS Flashback, enough M.2 slots and all required I/O, the saving is real.
Keep it
Upgrade only when the existing motherboard creates a specific storage, networking, expansion or compatibility problem.
Check X870 next

Eight B650 vs B850 mistakes to avoid
- Assuming B850 is automatically faster in games. The chipset upgrade is about connectivity, not extra GPU or CPU compute performance.
- Assuming every B850 board has PCIe 5.0 graphics. AMD’s baseline is PCIe 4.0. Check the exact motherboard and CPU combination.
- Buying Gen5 storage just because B850 supports it. Gaming load-time improvements are generally much smaller than sequential benchmark differences.
- Ignoring BIOS age on B650 stock. A newer Ryzen processor may require a firmware update. BIOS Flashback makes that much safer.
- Choosing by phase count alone. VRM controller design, stage quality, heatsinks and actual implementation matter.
- Counting slots without reading lane-sharing notes. One M.2 device can reduce or disable another PCIe connection.
- Assuming Wi-Fi 7 or 5GbE comes from B850 itself. Networking is board-specific.
- Paying a 25–30% premium for features you cannot name. If a proven B650 already has everything your PC will use, put the saving into another component.
Final verdict: B650 or B850?
For most new AM5 builds
Start with B850.
If the comparable B850 motherboard costs the same, less, or no more than roughly 10% extra, the newer platform baseline and current board designs make it the easier buy.
When B650 is the smarter purchase
Buy B650 when all of these are true:
- the board has proven power delivery,
- it has BIOS Flashback or already supports your processor,
- it has every M.2, USB, network and expansion connection you need,
- and it is meaningfully cheaper than the comparable B850 board.
At a 20%+ discount, a board like the B650 Tomahawk can still be one of the smarter AM5 purchases.
At the same price, buy B850.
And if you already own a good B650 motherboard, keep using it until you can identify an actual feature it lacks.
The right motherboard is not the one with the newest number.
It is the one whose power delivery, lane layout, storage, networking, USB, firmware features and price match the PC you are actually building.

Does B850 have USB4?
USB4 is optional on B850. If USB4 is essential, check the exact B850 motherboard or consider X870, where AMD makes USB4 part of the platform baseline.
Is a PCIe 5.0 SSD worth it for gaming?
Usually not if it carries a significant premium. Independent testing shows relatively small game-loading differences between modern PCIe NVMe generations. Gen5 becomes much more valuable for workloads involving sustained large-file transfers.
Should I buy B650 for Ryzen 9000?
You can. AMD says 600-series AM5 boards support Ryzen 9000, but a BIOS update may be required. For older stock, I strongly prefer a board with BIOS Flashback.
Should I buy B850 for Ryzen 9000?
B850 is the easier default for a new Ryzen 9000 build when pricing is close, because it is a newer board generation and guarantees Gen5 primary NVMe connectivity.
Do I need B850 for a Ryzen 7 X3D CPU?
No. A high-quality B650 motherboard with appropriate BIOS support and adequate power delivery can run an X3D gaming CPU perfectly well.
Should I upgrade my B650 motherboard to B850?
Usually not. Upgrade only when the B850 board solves a specific limitation such as storage expansion, networking, PCIe layout, USB connectivity or a hardware issue with the old board.
Is B650 obsolete in 2026?
No. AMD has been transitioning the mainstream channel toward B850, but B650 remains fully relevant where good boards are available at attractive prices and receive the BIOS support required by your CPU.
How long will AM5 be supported?
AMD announced in May 2026 that Socket AM5 support is being extended through 2029. Individual motherboard support for future processors still depends on BIOS availability from the board manufacturer.
How much more should I pay for B850 over B650?
My general rule is: at the same price or up to roughly 10% extra, buy B850. Between 10–20%, compare actual features. Above roughly 20%, a strong B650 board becomes very attractive if it already covers your needs.
Is B650E better than B850?
Neither is universally better. B650E guarantees more Gen5 capability than ordinary B650 and can outperform a basic B850 board in expansion features. Compare the exact boards, prices and lane layouts.
