USB4 is one of the easiest motherboard features to pay for without ever using.
A Type-C connector does not automatically mean USB4. The same connector can carry USB at 5Gbps, 10Gbps, 20Gbps or USB4 at up to 40Gbps depending on the motherboard.
That means the right question is not: “Which AM5 motherboard has USB-C?”
It is: “Do I own anything that can actually use USB4?”
Fast external NVMe drives, USB4 docks, capture hardware, high-speed creator peripherals and Type-C displays are good reasons.
A mouse, keyboard, ordinary flash drive and gaming headset are not.

The straightforward route to two rear 40Gbps USB4 ports when you do not need 5Gb networking or a four-drive M.2 layout.

- Gen5 GPU, Gen5 M.2 and 2.5GbE
- Limitation: only three M.2 positions and several rear ports are USB 2.0
ASRock X870 LiveMixer WiFi

Before buying any of them, name the USB4 device
If you can say “this external NVMe enclosure,” “this USB4 dock,” “this capture device,” or “this Type-C display”, USB4 may be worth paying for.
If the answer is only “future-proofing,” compare a good B850 motherboard before spending more.

USB-C describes the physical connector.
The port behind that connector can operate at very different speeds.
USB-C 10Gbps
Useful for ordinary external SSDs, phones and peripherals, but it is not USB4.
USB-C 20Gbps
Faster and useful for higher-performance external storage, but still not the same as a 40Gbps USB4 implementation.
USB4 40Gbps
The class of port to look for when buying around fast USB4 storage, docks and compatible high-bandwidth peripherals.
The USB4 speed is the maximum link rate, not a promise that an external SSD will sustain exactly 40Gbps of file-transfer speed.
The drive, enclosure, controller, cable and protocol overhead all affect real throughput.
Do you need X870 or X870E for USB4?
Not technically.
AMD lists USB4 as standard on X870 and X870E but optional on B850.
That distinction is useful.
If you want the simplest shopping rule, X870 guarantees that USB4 is part of the platform specification.
With B850, you must inspect the exact motherboard.
B850
USB4: optional.
Best starting chipset for most gaming PCs when USB4 is not required.
X870
USB4: standard.
The natural choice when USB4 is the main reason you are moving above B850.
X870E
USB4: standard.
Adds a larger total PCIe/I/O budget for expansion-heavy workstation builds.
X870E does not have more Gen5 lanes than X870 in AMD’s current table
AMD currently lists both X870 and X870E at up to 24 usable PCIe 5.0 lanes.
X870E’s advantage is the larger total usable lane and chipset-I/O budget: 44 usable PCIe lanes versus 36 on X870, plus potentially more USB and SATA connectivity.
You can buy B850 with USB4 too
One useful example is the ASUS ROG Strix B850-E Gaming WiFi.
ASUS gives it one rear 40Gbps USB4 Type-C port, 5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7, five M.2 slots and a large collection of 10Gbps USB ports.
That makes it worth comparing if you only need one USB4 connection and otherwise prefer B850.
But the board also demonstrates why you still need to read the lane-sharing table.
With Ryzen 7000/9000, enabling either M2_2 or M2_3 reduces the primary Gen5 graphics slot from x16 to x8.
Do not assume B850 with USB4 is automatically cheaper or simpler
A premium B850 board can carry so much extra hardware that a good X870 board becomes the cleaner USB4 purchase. Compare the entire board, not the chipset badge.
The five USB4 motherboard picks in detail
1. MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk WiFi
The Tomahawk is the board I would start with because it balances USB4 with the other features a performance AM5 system is likely to need over several years.
MSI gives it two rear 40Gbps Type-C USB4 ports, 5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7 and four onboard M.2 connections.
With Ryzen 7000 or 9000, M2_1 and M2_2 can both operate at PCIe 5.0 x4.
M2_4 runs at Gen4 x4, while M2_3 operates at Gen4 x2.
Audio is handled by an ALC4080 codec, and the rear panel includes BIOS Flash, Clear CMOS and a useful mixture of USB4, 10Gbps, 5Gbps and Type-C connectivity.
Independent TechSpot testing also found the Tomahawk’s power delivery comfortably capable of sustained Ryzen 9 loads.
The second Gen5 M.2 shares bandwidth with USB4
The two rear USB4 ports and M2_2 share a CPU PCIe 5.0 x4 link.
When a drive is installed in M2_2, MSI’s default configuration splits that link so both sides operate with x2 bandwidth.
You can force M2_2 to x4 in BIOS, but doing so disables the USB4 ports. If USB4 is why you bought the board, use M2_1 for the primary Gen5 SSD and treat M2_2 strategically.
Buy it if: you want a well-rounded gaming or mixed-use AM5 board with dual USB4, four M.2 positions, 5Gb networking and strong recovery features.
Skip it if: USB4 is the only premium feature you need and the Pro RS WiFi covers your storage and networking requirements for less.
2. ASRock X870 Pro RS WiFi
The Pro RS WiFi is the board for somebody whose requirements are simpler than the Tomahawk’s feature list.
You still get two rear USB4 Type-C ports operating at up to 40Gbps, Wi-Fi 7, BIOS Flashback, PCIe 5.0 graphics with Ryzen 7000/9000 and one Gen5 x4 M.2 slot.
Networking drops to 2.5Gb Ethernet.
The storage layout is also simpler:
- one Gen5 x4 M.2,
- one Gen4 x4 M.2,
- one Gen3 x4/SATA M.2,
- and four SATA ports.
That is still plenty for a normal gaming PC using one boot SSD, one large game SSD and perhaps a third drive later.
The board uses a 14+2+1 80A power design and TechSpot’s testing found its VRM temperature extremely comfortable even under a sustained Ryzen 9 workload.
The rear USB count looks better than the high-speed mix
The Pro RS has plenty of physical rear USB sockets, but six of them are USB 2.0. If your desk is full of high-bandwidth devices rather than keyboards, controllers and receivers, the LiveMixer is the much more appropriate upgrade.
Buy it if: dual USB4 is the main reason you are leaving B850 and 2.5GbE plus three M.2 drives are enough.
Skip it if: you already know you need 5Gb networking, four NVMe drives or a large collection of faster rear USB ports.
3. ASRock X870 LiveMixer WiFi
The LiveMixer is one of the most interesting X870 boards in 2026 because its feature list looks more like a creator board than a traditional entry-level model.
It provides two rear USB4 connections, 5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7 and an unusually large number of ordinary USB ports.
Storage is even stronger:
- two Gen5 x4 M.2 connections,
- two Gen4 x4 M.2 connections,
- and two SATA ports.
It also uses the better ALC4082 audio codec and includes additional physical PCIe expansion slots.
TechSpot’s 2026 full X870 roundup found its VRM topping out at only 59°C during a one-hour Ryzen 9 9950X stress test.
That is far beyond what a normal gaming or streaming build needs from the power delivery.
The second Gen5 SSD and USB4 cannot both get full bandwidth
M2_2 shares bandwidth with the board’s two rear USB4 ports.
With an SSD installed there, ASRock runs M2_2 and the USB4 controller at x2 by default.
You can configure M2_2 for x4 operation in BIOS, but that disables both rear USB4 ports. If USB4 is the reason you bought the motherboard, this is not a footnote to ignore.
Buy it if: your desk has audio hardware, capture devices, webcams, external drives and other peripherals, or you want four onboard M.2 positions and 5Gb networking.
Skip it if: your entire setup is one GPU, one SSD and one USB4 device. The Pro RS is the simpler board for that job.
4. ASUS ProArt X870E-Creator WiFi
This is where a much more expensive motherboard can make professional sense.
The ProArt is not trying to add gaming performance.
It is trying to reduce external adapters, PCIe cards and networking bottlenecks in a working PC.
The rear panel gives you two USB4 40Gbps Type-C ports, seven 10Gbps Type-A ports, another 20Gbps Type-C connection, 10Gb Ethernet and a second 2.5Gb Ethernet port.
You also get Wi-Fi 7 and four M.2 positions, including two Gen5-capable drives.
X870E’s larger platform lane budget is more useful here because this is exactly the sort of build likely to populate several drives, expansion cards and fast external devices simultaneously.
The DisplayPort input is a real creator feature
The rear DisplayPort input can feed a display signal into the board’s USB4 path.
That makes a clean one-cable USB-C display or dock workflow more practical when you want the display signal to originate from a discrete graphics card rather than relying only on motherboard/CPU graphics output.
Buy it if: you edit from fast external storage, move large projects across a 10Gb network, use USB4 docks or capture hardware, or need workstation-level PCIe and storage flexibility.
Skip it if: this is mainly a gaming PC. None of the 10GbE, dual LAN or creator I/O makes the same Ryzen processor produce more frames.
5. ASUS ROG Strix X870-I Gaming WiFi
USB4 becomes especially attractive in Mini-ITX because the board does not have spare PCIe slots for adding every missing feature later.
The ASUS X870-I provides two rear 40Gbps USB4 ports, Wi-Fi 7, Intel 2.5Gb Ethernet and PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics with Ryzen 7000/9000.
Storage consists of one Gen5 x4 and one Gen4 x4 M.2 position.
ASUS also includes BIOS FlashBack, Clear CMOS, Q-Release hardware and the ROG Strix Hive II external module.
The Hive moves audio and several controls away from the tiny motherboard PCB, while the ROG FPS card carries additional internal headers and SATA connections.
That is an ingenious solution to limited board space, but you should plan around those additional modules while choosing the case and routing cables.
Mini-ITX USB4 is not just a smaller ATX purchase
You only have two DIMM slots, one PCIe expansion slot and two onboard M.2 positions. Buy the X870-I because the compact case and USB4 connectivity are both requirements—not because it looks like a premium version of a normal gaming motherboard.
Buy it if: you are committed to a high-end Mini-ITX case and need USB4 external storage, docks or displays.
Skip it if: the case can take Micro-ATX/ATX or you have no USB4 devices. A B850 Mini-ITX board is usually the smarter gaming purchase.
Mini-ITX alternative: MSI MPG X870I Edge Ti EVO WiFi
The MSI is the X870-I alternative I would choose when the compact build needs more networking or storage.
MSI fits:
- dual 40Gbps USB4,
- 5Gb Ethernet,
- Wi-Fi 7,
- one Gen5 M.2,
- two additional Gen4 M.2 connections,
- and two SATA ports
into a 170 × 170mm Mini-ITX layout.
One of those additional M.2 slots and the SATA connectivity depend on MSI’s 5-in-1 expansion card, so this is not quite the same as having three simple flat M.2 positions on a full-size board.
It is also available in the light/silver aesthetic that fits white small-form-factor builds particularly well.
Expect warmer VRM temperatures in this tiny layout
TechSpot measured the X870I Edge Ti EVO at 86°C during its sustained Ryzen 9 9950X stress test.
That remains within the safe range of the components and the board completed the test successfully, but it reinforces the importance of airflow when placing a high-power Ryzen 9 in a tightly packed Mini-ITX case.

USB4 lane sharing is the specification you should read before buying
Motherboards have a finite number of CPU and chipset PCIe lanes.
Manufacturers therefore have to decide how USB4 controllers, M.2 slots and additional PCIe slots share those resources.
The result differs from board to board.
MSI X870 Tomahawk
USB4 and M2_2 share one CPU PCIe link.
Populate M2_2 and both split bandwidth by default. Force M2_2 to x4 and USB4 is disabled.
ASRock X870 LiveMixer
The second Gen5 M.2 slot shares with both rear USB4 ports.
Using M2_2 reduces both sides to x2. Force the SSD to x4 and USB4 turns off.
More M.2 slots do not always mean more simultaneous full-speed devices
Count the slots, but then read the bandwidth table. A four-drive board with shared lanes can behave very differently depending on exactly which positions you populate.
Can USB4 carry your monitor signal?
Yes on these boards, but the details matter.
On boards such as the MSI Tomahawk and ASRock X870 models, display output over the rear USB4 ports depends on the processor’s integrated graphics path.
Plugging an NVIDIA or Radeon graphics card into the main PCIe slot does not automatically mean the motherboard’s USB4 port routes that discrete GPU’s DisplayPort signal.
The ProArt is different because ASUS includes a dedicated DisplayPort input designed for the USB4 display path.
This matters for one-cable desk setups
If your goal is to connect a USB-C monitor or dock and carry discrete-GPU video through the motherboard’s USB4 connection, verify exactly how the board handles DisplayPort input before buying. The existence of USB4 alone does not guarantee the workflow you have in mind.
Do not confuse USB4 with high-wattage laptop charging
USB4 defines high-speed connectivity.
It does not automatically mean the motherboard can provide 100W, 140W or 240W of USB Power Delivery.
Many motherboard USB4 ports provide much lower charging power.
For example, ASRock specifies up to 15W on the rear USB4 implementation of boards such as the Pro RS.
The ProArt’s separate front-panel 20Gbps Type-C header can provide up to 30W, but that is still very different from a high-wattage laptop charger.
If charging is part of your intended dock setup, verify the exact PD specification separately from the USB data speed.
Who actually benefits from USB4?
USB4 is worth paying for if…
- You edit directly from fast external NVMe storage.
- You frequently copy very large files to external SSDs.
- You use a USB4 or compatible high-end dock.
- You use capture or creator hardware that requires the bandwidth.
- You have a Type-C display workflow that the board supports.
- You want to consolidate several desk devices through one fast connection.
Stay with B850 if…
- The PC is mainly used for gaming.
- Your external drives are normal 5Gbps or 10Gbps USB models.
- You use ordinary keyboard, mouse and headset peripherals.
- You have no USB4 dock or display.
- You cannot currently name the USB4 device you plan to connect.
- The saved motherboard budget can improve your GPU or SSD capacity instead.
When X870E is actually worth paying for
USB4 alone is not a good reason to choose X870E because X870 already includes USB4 as standard.
Choose X870E when the rest of the platform needs more expansion.
Examples include:
- multiple PCIe expansion devices,
- very large NVMe storage configurations,
- creator or workstation networking,
- more chipset-connected USB/SATA resources,
- or professional workflows that genuinely use several of these at once.
That is exactly why the ProArt X870E-Creator makes sense, while buying X870E for a one-GPU gaming PC usually does not.
A note about ASRock and recent AM5/X3D history
The Pro RS and LiveMixer are both compelling on features, so the ASRock history should be discussed rather than ignored.
During 2025, user-reported Ryzen 7 9800X3D failures and boot problems appeared disproportionately often on ASRock AM5 boards.
That reporting did not prove every ASRock motherboard was defective, and some apparently failed systems were recoverable firmware or boot problems rather than physically dead processors.
ASRock continued releasing BIOS updates and newer AGESA firmware through 2026.
How I would configure a new ASRock X3D system
- Check the current BIOS support page for the exact board.
- Use an appropriate current stable BIOS.
- Validate the PC at normal/default settings first.
- Enable EXPO only after the system is stable.
- Retest memory stability.
- Add PBO or Curve Optimizer changes separately.
If that history makes you uncomfortable, the MSI Tomahawk is the easier overall recommendation.
Your CPU can change PCIe and USB4 behavior
Many high-speed motherboard resources come directly from the Ryzen processor.
Ryzen 7000 and 9000 desktop processors expose a different PCIe lane configuration from Ryzen 8000 APUs.
For example, the same X870 motherboard can provide Gen5 x16 graphics with Ryzen 7000/9000 but operate the slot at Gen4 x8 or even x4 with particular Ryzen 8000 models.
Some secondary CPU-connected M.2 slots can also disappear with certain Ryzen 8000 processors.
If you are filling several SSD slots and using USB4 at the same time, check the exact CPU/board bandwidth table before ordering.
What to avoid when buying an AM5 motherboard for USB4
- Assuming every Type-C port is USB4. Read the speed specification beside the exact port.
- Buying X870E just because it is above X870. USB4 is already standard on X870.
- Ignoring M.2 lane sharing. A second Gen5 SSD can reduce USB4 bandwidth or disable it entirely on some boards.
- Assuming USB4 automatically routes your discrete-GPU display signal. Check the motherboard’s display-routing implementation.
- Assuming 40Gbps USB4 means high-power charging. Data bandwidth and USB Power Delivery are separate specifications.
- Paying for huge VRM numbers you will never use. Every decent board here can run normal Ryzen gaming CPUs comfortably.
- Ignoring the processor’s PCIe lane configuration. Ryzen 8000 APUs can change graphics and storage behavior.
- Buying USB4 for theoretical future-proofing. If you cannot name a device that benefits, put the money into hardware that changes the experience today.

Does every X870 motherboard have USB4?
