Thermalright is on a quest to make a great CPU cooler at literally every single price point. That means if you are struggling to cool a demanding CPU but have barely any budget to spend, they have the Assassin Spirit 120.
The Assassin Spirit 120 EVO Dark is a tower cooler that features 4 nickel-plated copper heat pipes that end on a bare copper base. While Thermalright hasn’t issued an official rating for this cooler, my recommendation is to use it only up to 125 Watt TDP CPUs which includes almost every 8-core Ryzen CPU and Intel’s Core i5 13600K.
The entire cooler is black and dark in terms of aesthetics with a single aluminum fin array layout; the nice thing about installing a single fin array cooler is that there is almost no hassle to fit it in properly inside any PC. It has a thickness of just 48 mm and is 154 mm high; it can easily fit in almost every case, except for low clearance ITX cases. The length is 120 mm across which is perfectly aligned with the included 120 mm fan.
Overall, it is quite compact even with the 120 mm fan, which thankfully does not interfere at all with the RAM slots so no matter how tall the DRAM kits are, they won’t budge into the cooler. The fan is also one of the quietest in any CPU cooler and is never audible at any level. There are Fluid Dynamic Bearings over the motor which helps the fan stay silent even when spinning really fast.

The Dark Rock Pro 5 is the successor to the legendary Dark Rock Pro 4 which was already one of the most powerful air coolers and quite popular among enthusiasts. The new model features 7 copper heatpipes that move heat away from the nickel-plated copper base. Be quiet! rated it to handle 270 watts of heat which basically covers every single CPU whether it’s from Intel or AMD.
Generally, I am not that keen on choosing a cooler based on looks, but this is one of the most well-built CPU coolers with a lot of thought behind the design and aesthetics. A lot of thought was definitely put to make sure that the fans don’t stick out or protrude from the cooler.
The fans are not identical in size and this is a deliberate choice by be quiet! There is a standard 120 mm fan on the outer rim and a custom 135 mm fan in the middle of the aluminum fin array. It can very easily pop off the middle and is easy to clean and maintain. The fans also have different top speeds; the 135 mm fan tops out at 1700 RPM while the 120 mm fan can theoretically top out at 2000 RPM.
The fans have been redesigned with more blades that push more air without spinning a lot. The fan speed starts at 500 rpm which is completely dead silent. Even till 1200 rpm, you cannot hear any sound coming from the cooler whatsoever. Being true to their name, be quiet! has done a fantastic job at making an inaudible cooler. You only really hear it at 1600 to 1700 RPM which is the maximum speed anyway.
With so many great things about the cooler, it is also important for me to address some of the main concerns with it. The Dark Rock Pro 5 is quite large in size and with a height of 168 mm, you will definitely need space in your case to fit this properly. Thankfully, the outer 120 mm fan is not going to interfere with large RAM kits so you can easily choose a decently tall kit without worrying that the fan will obstruct it.
Other than the massive size, the Dark Rock Pro 5 uses a custom fan header which comes from the middle fan. The outer fan connects to the middle fan so that it can control the speed of both fans. The middle fan also does not use a standard 120 or 140 mm fan. Instead, this strange 135 mm design is custom built according to be quiet!’s liking and in case of a replacement, it needs to be done by the manufacturer.
Although I can understand be quiet! for using a custom fan because they can fine tune every aspect of it, it would’ve made things a lot more convenient had they used a standardized fan with a custom brace.
The other issue I have is that the price in my opinion is a tad higher than I’d like it to be. Nevertheless it still holds a comfortable lead in terms of overall performance, size, and sound profile. The only cooler with the same level of build quality in this price range that I could think of is the Noctua NH-D15S. Personally, I am a huge fan of the NH-D15S but the Dark Rock Pro 5 edges it out in everything. It looks better, runs quieter, is slightly smaller, and costs less.
In conclusion, for around $80, the Dark Rock Pro 5 is a powerful air cooler that can give liquid cooled AIO’s a run for their money. It is especially perfect for anyone building a workstation PC and don’t want to use a liquid cooler to extend the life of the PC as long as possible. ID-Cooling has been making CPU coolers for a long time but their focus was entirely on the ultra-budget coolers. Now that the FROZN series is here, it seems that they are finally ready to tackle the mid-ranged and high-end market.
The FROZN series comes with two coolers: the A720 and the A620. The A720 is a direct competitor to the Noctua NH-D15, however, our focus today is on the A620.
The A620 is a dual-tower cooler that features 6 copper heat pipes that end on a nickel-plated copper base. ID-Cooling is confident in the A620 and has rated it to handle 270 watts of heat. Although that is an impressive rating, I would not recommend you overclocking an i9 14900KS on this cooler. However, the performance is incredibly promising and the A620 can handle high-end CPUs like the i7 13700K or Ryzen 9 5950X with ease.
Looking at the design, at a first glance, you can mistake the FROZN A620 for the DeepCool AK620 because of how similar they look. In fact, I don’t think the name A620 is in any way a coincidence; ID-Cooling knows exactly what they are doing. Not only does the A620 look a lot like the AK620, there are a few things that it outright does much better than DeepCool.
For starters, the A620 trims the design by making the heatsinks 120 mm instead of 129 mm of the AK620. This way, the 120 mm fans are completely flush with the rest of the heatsink giving the cooler a uniform look. Other than the length, ID-Cooling also reduced the height of the cooler a bit to 154 mm compared to the AK620’s 160 mm. They should have made the cooler a bit taller, as this leaves only about 36 mm of RAM clearance, which means taller RAM kits will interfere with the outermost fan.
Speaking of the fans, ID-Cooling improves over DeepCool’s fan design with two 120 mm fans that are much quieter.
These fans have Fluid Dynamic Bearings over their motor which ensures they spin fast without making any sound, thus resulting in less noise at higher RPMs. The range for both of the fans varies between 500 to 2000 RPM. Even up until 1200 RPM, the fans are barely audible in an open air bench. In a closed case, it is still near impossible to hear the fans up until 1500 RPM. It is only between 1700 to 2000 RPM when the fans become a bit noisy but that is to be expected.
The overall performance of the cooler is great and allows CPUs like the 5700X3D to run cool and dead silent even during long gaming sessions. The 5700X3D barely crosses 50 degrees Celsius with the fans spinning at about 1100 RPM. This results in the fans producing around 37 decibels of noise which is fantastic because it is barely audible.
Generally speaking, there aren’t any bad budget CPU coolers. In fact, they put much more expensive CPU coolers to shame. Coolers like the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 and the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 are incredible because of their ability to cool high TDP CPUs on a budget.
However while I am a fan of both of them, I feel that they miss out on some important elements that are way overdue for improvements.
In trying to offer a decent product at a low price, some compromises are eventually made. Even the DeepCool AK620, which is one of my all-time favorite coolers, is guilty of this.
The FROZN A620 fixes pretty much every complaint that I have with budget coolers. Compared to the A620, the AK620 fans are a bit noisier and the uneven design becomes much more apparent when you put these two side by side.
Even the color choice of the A620 reflects that a lot of careful thought went into it. The dark black tone of the A620 is also much more pleasing to look at compared to the shiny aluminum fins of the AK620.
Finally, the price is what seals the deal; the FROZN A620 is nearly half the price of the AK620 which makes it a no-brainer.
