The Ryzen 7 9850X3D is still an eight-core gaming processor with a 120W default TDP, but it is not thermally identical to the 9800X3D.
Its higher voltage and 5.6GHz maximum boost make it meaningfully warmer under sustained load.
AMD does not include a cooler and recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance. That does not mean a good air cooler is automatically inadequate. It means I would avoid treating this processor like a low-power CPU that can be paired with any small tower cooler.
The 9850X3D is warmer than the 9800X3D
In a controlled GamersNexus all-core test using the same 360mm ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II A-RGB, the 9850X3D averaged about 83°C. The 9800X3D held approximately 74–75°C in the same workload.
The 9850X3D also pulled 164W through the EPS12V cables before motherboard VRM losses, compared with 143W for the 9800X3D.
That does not make air cooling impossible. It does mean that a borderline cooler chosen for the 9800X3D should not automatically be carried over to the faster CPU.

No—not in the sense that a quality air cooler cannot run the processor.
AMD’s exact wording is that liquid cooling is recommended for optimal performance.
That distinction matters.
A gaming workload usually does not load all eight cores as heavily or as continuously as Blender, CPU rendering, long code compilation or another sustained productivity task.
A large dual-tower air cooler can therefore make complete sense in a gaming-first system with strong case airflow.
The 360mm AIO becomes easier to justify when:
- the CPU frequently runs sustained all-core workloads,
- Precision Boost Overdrive is enabled,
- you want maximum boost headroom,
- the case already supports a thick 360mm radiator cleanly,
- or you prefer moving the CPU heat directly to the case perimeter.
My practical cooling floor
For a normal tower build, I would begin with a competent dual-tower air cooler rather than a small single-tower model. For sustained all-core workloads, I would move to a strong 280mm or 360mm AIO.
The three Ryzen 7 9850X3D cooler picks in detail
1. Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE
The Phantom Spirit 120 SE is where I would start for a gaming-first 9850X3D build.
It uses two fin towers, seven 6mm heatpipes and two 120mm PWM fans rather than trying to cool the processor with a compact single tower.
Thermalright rates the cooler at 154mm high, which makes it easier to fit than the 168mm Noctua, although 154mm is still too tall for many compact cases.
The stock fans run at up to 1500RPM and are officially rated for 66.17 CFM each.
This recommendation is not based on the idea that the Phantom Spirit will produce the lowest possible temperature in every workload.
It is based on the much more useful question: how much cooling does a gaming-focused 9850X3D build actually need?
A good dual-tower air cooler avoids pumps, tubing and radiator-fit issues while still giving the CPU substantial thermal capacity.
That makes it the rational stopping point when gaming is the main workload and the case already has competent front intake and rear or top exhaust airflow.
Check RAM height and the real installed height
The cooler’s front fan can overhang the memory area.
Tall RGB RAM may require moving that fan upward. Every millimeter the fan moves upward is effectively added to the cooler’s installed height.
A case rated for exactly 154mm is therefore not enough when the front fan must be raised. Check both RAM height and case clearance.
Buy it if: the PC is mainly for gaming, your case has good airflow and you want strong cooling without paying for an AIO or premium-brand air cooler.
Skip it if: the case is narrow, the memory is unusually tall or the CPU will spend hours under sustained all-core load.
2. Noctua NH-D15 G2 LBC
The NH-D15 G2 LBC is the air cooler for somebody who wants to keep the simplicity of air cooling but is willing to pay for a more refined fan, mounting and accessory package.
Noctua uses eight heatpipes, two asymmetrical fin stacks and two NF-A14x25r G2 140mm fans.
The two fans are deliberately speed-offset to reduce undesirable interaction tones when they run together.
Noctua rates the complete cooler at 168mm high, 150mm wide and 152mm deep with both fans installed.
It also weighs 1,525 grams with the fans, so this is not a cooler to purchase before checking both the case dimensions and how the finished system will be transported.
The reason I am choosing the LBC variant for this CPU-specific guide is its base shape.
Noctua designed the Low Base Convexity version for relatively flat processors such as AMD AM5 CPUs, allowing strong contact even without relying entirely on offset mounting.
That specialization also creates its most important limitation.
Noctua does not recommend the LBC variant for LGA1851 or LGA1700. If you expect this cooler to move into a future Intel system, the standard NH-D15 G2 is the more versatile purchase.
RAM clearance can change the total height
With both fans in their normal position, the NH-D15 G2 is designed around modules up to approximately 32mm beneath the front fan area.
The front fan can be raised for taller memory, but the case must provide more than the cooler’s standard 168mm clearance.
Low-profile RAM is the cleanest pairing with a cooler this large.
Buy it if: you want premium air cooling, quieter fans, AM5-specific contact and a six-year manufacturer warranty.
Skip it if: value is the priority, the case cannot clear 168mm, the RAM is tall, or you want the same cooler to move into a future Intel build.
3. ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360
This is the cooler I would choose when the 9850X3D is not being purchased only for gaming.
ARCTIC uses a thicker-than-usual 38mm radiator rather than the approximately 27mm radiator found on many mainstream AIOs.
The complete radiator measures 398 × 120 × 38mm, and the three 25mm-thick P12 Pro fans bring the installed radiator-and-fan stack to roughly 63mm.
The fans can run from 600 to 3000RPM, giving the cooler a very large performance range.
ARCTIC also offsets the cold plate toward the AMD CPU hotspot and includes a small PWM-controlled fan over the pump assembly to move air across the motherboard’s voltage-regulator area.
Independent Hardware Busters testing found the Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 particularly strong on AMD and highly competitive in performance per dollar.
The tradeoff is acoustics at the top of the fan range.
Three fans running near 3000RPM are not subtle. I would use a carefully tuned BIOS fan curve rather than allowing them to jump to full speed during every brief temperature spike.
This AIO has more fit requirements than a normal 360mm model
The case needs at least 63mm of installed clearance for the radiator and fans.
ARCTIC also warns that oversized heatsinks on the motherboard’s first M.2 slot can interfere with the pump/block assembly on some boards.
Check the ARCTIC motherboard compatibility list and use the site’s case-fit calculator before ordering.
Buy it if: the CPU regularly handles long all-core workloads, you intend to use PBO, or you want the strongest thermal headroom of these three options.
Skip it if: the case cannot accommodate the thick radiator, you want the mechanical simplicity of air cooling or gaming is the only demanding workload.
Air cooling vs AIO liquid cooling for the 9850X3D
Choose a large air cooler if…
- The PC is mainly used for gaming.
- You value mechanical simplicity.
- You do not want a pump running continuously.
- Your case has strong airflow.
- The case and RAM clear a large dual-tower heatsink.
Choose a 360mm AIO if…
- The CPU runs sustained all-core workloads.
- You plan to use PBO or pursue maximum boost headroom.
- The case supports a thick 360mm radiator cleanly.
- You want CPU heat moved directly to a case exhaust location.
- You accept the added pump, tubing and installation complexity.
Do not assume that every 240mm AIO beats every large air cooler. Radiator size alone does not establish total cooling quality, pump behavior, fan quality or noise.
What temperatures are normal for the Ryzen 7 9850X3D?
There is no single correct temperature because the result depends on:
- ambient room temperature,
- the exact workload,
- case airflow,
- cooler mounting pressure and thermal paste,
- fan and pump curves,
- PBO and Curve Optimizer settings,
- and normal chip-to-chip variation.
AMD specifies a 95°C maximum operating temperature.
That number is a limit used by the processor’s temperature and boost management—not a temperature target every system should constantly reach.
Gaming temperatures should normally be judged separately from an all-core rendering or synthetic stress-test result.
Do not compare temperatures without comparing the test conditions
A CPU running at 80°C in a 30°C room is not directly comparable with one running at 75°C in a 20°C room. Fan speed, case configuration, power limits and workload duration must also be considered.
How PBO and Curve Optimizer affect cooler choice
AMD supports both Precision Boost Overdrive and Curve Optimizer on the Ryzen 7 9850X3D.
A stronger cooler can give the boost algorithm more thermal headroom, but it does not guarantee a particular clock speed.
The result still depends on power limits, voltage, workload and the quality of the individual processor.
A stable negative Curve Optimizer setting can sometimes reduce voltage and heat while preserving or improving boost behavior.
It is still an overclocking/tuning setting and must be stability-tested. Do not assume a system is stable merely because it completes one benchmark.
The cooler cannot compensate for poor case airflow
A dual-tower air cooler needs a steady supply of cool intake air and a clear path for heated air to leave the case.
A sensible starting layout is:
- front or lower intake fans,
- a rear exhaust fan,
- and optional top exhaust when the case supports it.
A glass-front case with heavily restricted intake can make an excellent cooler perform much worse than it would in a ventilated case.
With an AIO, the radiator position also changes which component receives the cooler incoming air.
Where should you install a 360mm AIO?
Top-mounted exhaust
Often the cleanest overall system layout because CPU heat is exhausted directly out of the case.
Check motherboard heatsink, RAM and 63mm radiator-stack clearance before assuming a top mount will fit.
Front-mounted intake
Can feed the radiator cooler external air, but the radiator and fans may reduce GPU clearance and warm the air entering the rest of the case.

When front-mounting an AIO, avoid positioning the pump as the highest point in the liquid loop when the case allows a better arrangement.
Check RAM clearance before choosing an air cooler
Both recommended air coolers can overhang the memory area.
Low-profile DDR5 is the easiest solution.
Tall RGB memory may still fit if the front fan is raised, but that changes the cooler’s total installed height.
This creates a three-part fit check:
- Measure or verify the RAM-module height.
- Determine how far the cooler’s front fan must move upward.
- Add that movement to the cooler’s standard height and compare it with the case limit.
Do not rely on the heatsink height alone
A 168mm cooler can become taller than 168mm when its front fan is raised above tall memory. Leave several millimeters of real safety margin rather than buying to an exact paper limit.
Installation checks that prevent most cooling problems
- Confirm AM5 mounting hardware. All three recommendations support AM5, but do not assume an old cooler box contains the current bracket.
- Remove the protective film. Check the cold plate before applying thermal paste.
- Apply the included paste correctly. Follow the cooler manufacturer’s method rather than applying an unnecessarily large amount.
- Tighten evenly. Alternate between mounting screws rather than fully tightening one side first.

What about a smaller single-tower or low-profile cooler?
I would not make one the default recommendation for the 9850X3D.

It can be, particularly for gaming and mixed use.
Radiator size alone does not determine performance, so the exact AIO matters more than the label.

For a buyer specifically seeking maximum sustained all-core headroom, however, I would still start with the 360mm ARCTIC rather than assuming a smaller AIO will deliver the same result.
Do you need a 420mm AIO?
No.
A 420mm cooler can provide additional radiator area and potentially lower fan speed, but it requires a much larger compatible case.
It is not necessary to run the 9850X3D correctly.
Once you reach a quality 360mm AIO, the remaining decision is often more about noise, fan curve, case fit and personal preference than about making the processor usable.
