LGA1851 is Intel’s current desktop socket for Core Ultra desktop processors, including the original Core Ultra 200S family and the newer 200S Plus processors.
The most important motherboard decision is usually not the brand. It is whether your PC actually needs H810, B860 or Z890.

Why B860 is my default LGA1851 chipset
B860 keeps most of the motherboard features that affect ordinary day-to-day use.
It supports DDR5 memory overclocking, so you can use compatible XMP kits without buying Z890.
It also gives motherboard manufacturers substantially more PCIe and high-speed I/O resources than H810.
That is why boards such as the B860 Tomahawk can include PCIe 5.0 graphics, Gen5 NVMe, Thunderbolt 4, 5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7 while still using Intel’s mainstream chipset.
B860 is not a “slow” chipset
If you are not manually overclocking the processor, the meaningful differences between a good B860 and Z890 board are primarily expansion, I/O and tuning options—not an automatic increase in CPU or gaming performance.
When Z890 is worth the extra money
Z890’s clearest advantage is CPU tuning.
Intel officially enables IA/CPU, BCLK and memory overclocking on Z890, whereas B860 supports memory overclocking but not IA/BCLK overclocking.
Z890 also has a much larger total platform PCIe and high-speed I/O budget.
That becomes useful for boards carrying more M.2 slots, multiple high-bandwidth PCIe devices and larger rear-I/O configurations.
Intel 200S Boost is another legitimate Z890 reason
Intel 200S Boost is available on compatible Z890 motherboards with supported unlocked Core Ultra processors.
Supported CPUs include the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus, Core Ultra 5 250K Plus, Core Ultra 9 285K, Ultra 7 265K/KF and Ultra 5 245K/KF.
If you actually intend to use that profile, Z890 is buying you a feature rather than merely a more expensive chipset name.

When H810 actually makes sense
H810 is the platform for a genuinely basic LGA1851 machine.
Intel gives it a much smaller chipset and platform I/O budget than B860, and it does not support CPU, BCLK or memory overclocking.
It also limits motherboard designs to one DIMM per memory channel, which is why H810 boards commonly have two DDR5 slots rather than four.
None of that makes H810 unusable.
It makes H810 appropriate when the machine is intentionally simple: one graphics card, one or two SSDs, modest networking and no tuning.
Compare H810 and B860 prices before buying
H810 is most attractive when it saves a meaningful amount of money.
Once the price approaches a competent B860 board, B860’s memory overclocking, larger I/O budget and stronger upgrade flexibility are usually worth the step up.

This Micro-ATX board gives you two DDR5 DIMM slots, two M.2 positions, a PCIe 4.0 x16 graphics slot, four SATA ports, 1Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6.
The first M.2 slot runs at PCIe 4.0 x4 while the second operates at PCIe 4.0 x2. It is a practical basic-system layout, but clearly less expandable than the B860 recommendations above.

1. MSI MAG B860 TOMAHAWK WIFI
The B860 Tomahawk is the board I would use as the reference point for a new LGA1851 system.
It gives the main graphics card a PCIe 5.0 x16 connection and provides three useful M.2 positions.
The primary CPU-connected M.2 slot runs at PCIe 5.0 x4, while both chipset-connected positions can operate at PCIe 4.0 x4.
Four SATA ports remain available.
Networking is one of the strongest reasons to choose it: Intel Killer 5Gb Ethernet plus Wi-Fi 7.
Rear connectivity includes a 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4 Type-C port, four 10Gbps Type-A ports, another 10Gbps Type-C connection, optical audio, Clear CMOS and Flash BIOS.

That is a very complete mainstream layout, and it is why I would not automatically pay for Z890 simply because the processor is an unlocked K-series SKU.

Skip it if: CPU/BCLK tuning or Intel 200S Boost is specifically part of your plan.
2. MSI PRO B860M-A WIFI
The PRO B860M-A shows how little CPU capability you actually have to give up when reducing motherboard cost.
You still get a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot and a CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 position.
The second M.2 slot runs at Gen4 x4 and the third at up to Gen4 x2.
Four SATA connections remain available.
Networking is particularly strong for a value-focused Micro-ATX board: Realtek 5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7.
MSI also retains rear Thunderbolt 4, a 10Gbps Type-A connection, USB-C, Clear CMOS and debug LEDs.
The compromises are mostly physical.
Micro-ATX provides less space around a large graphics card, and the board has fewer fast rear USB connections than the Tomahawk.
Onboard audio also uses the basic ALC897 codec.
Buy it if: Micro-ATX works, three NVMe drives are enough and you want more of the budget available for CPU/GPU performance.
Skip it if: you expect several PCIe add-in cards or want richer rear USB/audio.
3. GIGABYTE Z890 AORUS ELITE WIFI7
This is where I would move if buying an unlocked Intel CPU because you actually intend to use its unlocked features.
Z890 provides Intel’s IA/CPU and BCLK overclocking controls, making it the appropriate chipset for manual processor tuning.
It is also the chipset used by Intel 200S Boost on compatible boards.
The AORUS Elite gives you those platform capabilities without immediately moving into flagship-board pricing.
Storage consists of four M.2 positions, including one CPU-connected Gen5 x4 slot and three additional Gen4 connections.
The graphics slot is PCIe 5.0 x16.
Rear connectivity includes Thunderbolt 4, Wi-Fi 7 and optical audio.
GIGABYTE also uses an ALC1220 audio codec and provides its tool-less EZ-Latch mechanisms for the GPU and M.2 hardware.
The main specification that looks surprisingly modest is Ethernet: this Z890 board has 2.5GbE while the MSI B860 recommendations above provide 5GbE.
That is a useful reminder that a higher chipset does not automatically mean every motherboard feature is better.
Buy it if: CPU/BCLK tuning, Intel 200S Boost or the additional Z890 expansion budget gives your build something useful.
Skip it if: you plan to run the processor normally and the B860 Tomahawk already provides every connection you need.
4. ASUS ProArt Z890-CREATOR WIFI
This is not the “premium pick.”
It is the motherboard for a creator workstation that can use specific expensive features.
The strongest example is networking.
ASUS gives you both 10Gb Ethernet and a second 2.5Gb Ethernet connection alongside Wi-Fi 7.
If project files live on a fast NAS, that can matter every day.
Storage is similarly workstation-oriented.
There are five M.2 positions in total: one CPU-connected Gen5 x4 slot and four Gen4 positions, plus four SATA connectors.
Two CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 x16 physical slots can operate at x16 for one device or x8/x8 when both are populated.
That makes the board much more interesting for GPU plus accelerator or other high-bandwidth add-in-card configurations.
Rear I/O is one of its headline features: two Thunderbolt 5 Type-C ports plus another USB4/Thunderbolt connection.
This is the kind of board where spending more can be completely rational—provided those features map to your actual workflow.
Five M.2 slots still require resource planning
ASUS specifies that M.2_5 shares bandwidth with the lower chipset-connected PCIe 4.0 x16-size slot. Using M.2_5 disables that PCIe slot, so plan the workstation’s storage and add-in cards before assuming every connector can be populated independently.
Buy it if: 10Gb networking, Thunderbolt 5, x8/x8 CPU expansion and five onboard M.2 positions directly improve your work.
Skip it if: you are building a normal one-GPU gaming PC. Most of the hardware you are paying for would remain unused.
What changed with Intel Core Ultra 200S Plus?
Intel’s 2026 Core Ultra 200S Plus processors did not introduce a new desktop socket.
Intel says existing 800-series motherboards remain compatible with the new processors.
That means H810, B860 and Z890 boards already on the market can continue to be relevant, although the exact motherboard may require an appropriate BIOS update.
The Plus processors also raise official memory support to DDR5-7200.
Intel has additionally introduced early support for very high-capacity 4-rank CUDIMM memory on selected 800-series motherboards.
“LGA1851” does not guarantee every new memory feature
Intel describes 4-rank CUDIMM support as a feature of selected 800-series motherboards. Check the motherboard’s current BIOS and memory QVL rather than assuming every B860 or Z890 board supports every new high-capacity module.
What actually matters when choosing an LGA1851 motherboard
1. Decide whether CPU overclocking is something you will really use
This decision separates B860 from Z890 immediately.
If you normally install the CPU, enable XMP and start using the PC, B860 may already provide everything you need.
If manual CPU ratios, BCLK tuning or Intel 200S Boost are part of the project, buy Z890.
2. Do not buy Z890 just because the CPU has a K suffix
The K suffix means the processor is unlocked.
It does not mean you are required to use that capability.
A K-series Core Ultra processor can still be a sensible B860 pairing if the system will run at normal processor settings.
3. B860 still supports DDR5 overclocking
You do not need Z890 merely to use XMP.
Intel officially enables memory overclocking on B860 and Z890.
H810 is the chipset that gives up memory overclocking.
4. Start with two DIMMs for fast DDR5
High memory speeds are generally easier to achieve with one DIMM per channel.
For a typical 32GB, 48GB, 64GB or 96GB build, a matched two-module kit is usually the cleaner starting point.
5. DDR5-7200 is not the same as requiring DDR5-7200
The 2026 Core Ultra 200S Plus processors officially support memory speeds up to DDR5-7200 under Intel’s supported configurations.
That does not mean every build requires that exact speed.
Capacity, latency, stability and motherboard memory support matter too.
6. Four M.2 slots are already a lot
Three onboard NVMe positions are enough for many PCs.
Four gives comfortable expansion for a higher-end gaming or mixed productivity system.
Five and six M.2 boards make the most sense when local storage is genuinely part of the workstation workload.
7. Thunderbolt can be more important than the chipset badge
The B860 Tomahawk already provides Thunderbolt 4.
That means a buyer with one fast external SSD or dock does not automatically need Z890.
The ProArt’s Thunderbolt 5 connections are a different proposition, aimed at significantly higher-end creator connectivity.
8. Check Ethernet against your actual network
5GbE and 10GbE are useful only when the rest of your local network can take advantage of them.
If your router and NAS are 1Gb or 2.5Gb devices, paying for a 10Gb motherboard port does not make those devices faster.
9. Do not rank motherboards by VRM phase count
The power delivery must be appropriate for your processor and workload.
After that requirement is met, more phases do not automatically make the same Core Ultra CPU faster.
Storage, connectivity, BIOS tools, cooling and expansion are usually more useful comparison points.
10. Check PCIe and M.2 sharing before populating a workstation board
High-end motherboards can expose a large number of connectors, but CPU and chipset lanes are still finite.
Additional M.2 drives can disable lower PCIe slots or alter lane allocations.
If you intend to install several NVMe drives and several PCIe cards, read the motherboard’s lane-sharing table before buying.
Which motherboard tier fits your Core Ultra processor?
Core Ultra 5 250K Plus
Start with B860. Move to Z890 when CPU tuning or Intel 200S Boost is actually part of the plan.
Core Ultra 7 270K Plus
B860 remains completely viable at normal CPU settings. Z890 becomes easier to justify for tuning and heavier expansion.
Core Ultra 7 265K
A good B860 board can run a stock-clock build effectively. Choose Z890 specifically for the unlocked tuning functionality.
Core Ultra 9 285K
B860 is technically viable, but high-end 285K systems are more likely to have the storage, PCIe and tuning requirements that make Z890 useful.
ATX, Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX?
ATX
The easiest default when your case supports it. More physical room for expansion cards, fan headers and M.2 heatsinks.
Micro-ATX
Often the best route to lower motherboard and case cost without dropping to only two memory slots.
Mini-ITX
