The Ryzen 7 9850X3D is AMD’s newer eight-core X3D gaming processor. It has 8 cores, 16 threads, 96MB of L3 cache, a 120W default TDP and boost clocks up to 5.6GHz.
That does not turn the motherboard into a performance upgrade.
The 9850X3D can run on multiple AM5 chipset generations, including B650, B850, X670, X870 and X870E. For a gaming-focused PC, a good B850 board already provides everything needed to run the CPU properly.
Spend more only when the motherboard adds a feature the rest of the build actually needs: more SSDs, USB4, additional PCIe expansion, faster networking or a different form factor.

Why B850 is my starting point for the Ryzen 7 9850X3D
The Ryzen 7 9850X3D is a high-end gaming processor, but it is still an eight-core 120W CPU.
It does not need X870 or X870E simply because it sits near the top of AMD’s gaming lineup.
B850 supports Ryzen CPU overclocking and EXPO memory tuning, and individual boards can provide PCIe 5.0 graphics, Gen5 NVMe, fast Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7.
The B850 Tomahawk MAX WiFi II demonstrates the point particularly well: it gives the 9850X3D a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics connection plus two CPU-connected Gen5 M.2 slots.
X870 is a connectivity upgrade, not a gaming-FPS upgrade
Move to X870 when you need features such as USB4 or a particular motherboard layout. Do not move to X870 because you expect the chipset name itself to make the Ryzen 7 9850X3D faster.

There is one expansion-sharing detail to know
Installing a drive in M2_3 reduces the lower PCIe 4.0 expansion slot to x2.
MSI allows that PCIe slot to run at x4 through the BIOS, but doing so disables M2_3. This is unlikely to affect a normal one-GPU gaming PC, but it matters if you plan to populate both the storage and lower expansion slots heavily.
Buy it if: you want a full-size gaming motherboard with four M.2 positions, fast networking and plenty of upgrade room.
Skip it if: USB4 is mandatory, or the cheaper Gaming Plus MAX gives you everything you need at a significantly lower current price.
2. MSI MAG B850 GAMING PLUS MAX WIFI
This is the motherboard to compare with the Tomahawk when your storage requirements are more ordinary.
You still get a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics connection with the 9850X3D, so moving down the MSI lineup does not mean giving the graphics card a slower platform connection.
Storage consists of one CPU-connected Gen5 x4 M.2 slot, one Gen4 x4 M.2 position and a third chipset-connected M.2 slot running at up to Gen4 x2.
Four SATA connections remain available.
Networking is particularly good for a board positioned below the Tomahawk: MSI still provides 5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7.
There is no USB4, and you lose one M.2 position compared with the Tomahawk. But if you expect to run one boot SSD, one large game SSD and perhaps one future storage drive, three slots are already enough.
That is why this recommendation is price-sensitive. If the Gaming Plus MAX is meaningfully cheaper on the day you buy, it can be the better gaming purchase. If the prices are close, I would take the Tomahawk’s additional storage and board features.
Buy it if: three M.2 positions are enough and the current price makes it clearly cheaper than the Tomahawk.
Skip it if: the price difference is small enough that the Tomahawk’s fourth M.2 slot and additional features are worth having.
3. ASUS ROG Strix B850-E Gaming WiFi
The ROG Strix B850-E is the example that shows why chipset names are such a poor shortcut for judging motherboard features.
It is technically a B850 board, yet ASUS equips it with five M.2 positions, a 40Gbps USB4 connection, 5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 7 and ALC4080 onboard audio.
Three of its M.2 positions can operate at PCIe 5.0 x4 with the 9850X3D, while another two provide Gen4 storage.
For a PC that doubles as a gaming and local-content workstation, that amount of onboard NVMe storage can be genuinely useful.
It is much harder to justify for a normal gaming system with one or two SSDs. In that build, you would be paying for connectors that remain empty.
Three Gen5 M.2 slots come with a major lane tradeoff
The main PCIe 5.0 graphics slot runs at x16 when M.2_2 and M.2_3 are not using their shared CPU lanes.
Enable either M.2_2 or M.2_3 and the primary graphics connection operates at x8.
That may be perfectly acceptable for your hardware, but it means “five M.2 slots” should not be read as five completely independent storage connections with no effect elsewhere.

Mini-ITX should be a form-factor decision, not a performance decision.
If the entire PC is being built around a genuinely small case, the B850I AORUS PRO gives the 9850X3D the important modern connections while fitting into a 170mm × 170mm board.
The primary graphics connection runs at PCIe 5.0 x16 with Ryzen 9000 processors.
Storage consists of one CPU-connected Gen5 x4 M.2 position and another chipset-connected Gen4 x4 slot on the rear of the board.
You also get Wi-Fi 7 and ALC4080 audio.
The limitations are inherent to the format. There are only two DDR5 DIMM sockets, two M.2 positions and one primary PCIe expansion slot. Wired networking is also 2.5Gb rather than the 5Gb connection on the three ATX recommendations.
None of that is a problem if the objective is a compact gaming PC. It is unnecessary compromise if the board will be installed in a full-size tower.
Buy it if: your case requires Mini-ITX and two NVMe drives are enough.
Skip it if: you have room for Micro-ATX or ATX and expect to expand RAM, storage or PCIe hardware later.
How to choose a motherboard for the Ryzen 7 9850X3D
1. Start with the case size
If the case accepts ATX and compact size is not important, ATX is the easiest format to live with.
You get more physical room for M.2 heatsinks, fan headers and expansion cards, and there is less need for unusual daughterboards or stacked connectors.
Mini-ITX makes sense when small size is one of the main goals of the PC.
2. Count the NVMe drives before comparing chipsets
The Gaming Plus MAX gives you three M.2 positions. The Tomahawk gives you four. The Strix B850-E gives you five.
That progression sounds simple, but the best board is not the one with the largest number.
If you intend to use two drives, three available slots already leave room for an upgrade.
Five positions become useful for large local game libraries, video work, project storage and systems that deliberately avoid SATA drives.
3. Ask whether you need more than one Gen5 SSD
The 9850X3D provides enough CPU PCIe connectivity for motherboard manufacturers to expose multiple Gen5 devices, but not every build benefits from doing so.
A fast Gen4 SSD remains more than adequate for many game libraries. Do not pay for several Gen5 slots merely because they have the highest interface number.
4. USB4 is useful only when you have USB4 hardware

That can matter enormously with high-speed external SSDs and docks. It does very little for a mouse, keyboard, headset and game controller.

5. Do not buy the motherboard by VRM phase count
The Ryzen 7 9850X3D has a 120W default TDP.
It still deserves competent motherboard power delivery and cooling, especially if you use Precision Boost Overdrive or Curve Optimizer, but the most extreme VRM on the market is unnecessary.
Once the motherboard comfortably supports the processor, storage, networking and I/O are generally more useful ways to differentiate the boards on this page.
6. DDR5-5600 is AMD’s official specification — not the target ceiling
AMD officially rates the 9850X3D for DDR5-5600 with normal two-DIMM configurations.
Motherboards advertise much higher EXPO/overclocked memory speeds, but those are not a requirement for the CPU.
Memory stability depends on the kit, capacity, ranks, CPU memory controller and BIOS.

8. Check the BIOS before assuming a newly released CPU will boot
The 9850X3D launched in 2026, while many AM5 motherboards were manufactured before the processor existed.
A compatible AM5 motherboard may therefore require a BIOS update before recognizing the CPU.
BIOS Flashback or equivalent functionality makes that process much easier, especially when the board can update without an older CPU installed.
Already own a good B650, B650E, X670 or X670E motherboard?
Do not replace it just because the 9850X3D is newer
AMD officially supports the 9850X3D on several older AM5 chipset families as well as the current B850 and X870 platforms.
Check the exact motherboard manufacturer’s CPU-support list and required BIOS version.
If the board already has enough M.2 positions, USB, networking and expansion for your build, updating the BIOS can be a much better use of money than replacing the motherboard.
Should you buy B850 or X870 for the 9850X3D?
Buy B850 if…

Buy X870 if…

Do not forget the CPU cooler
