The Ryzen 9 9950X3D is different from the typical gaming CPU motherboard decision. It combines 16 cores and 32 threads with AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology and a 170W default TDP, so it makes sense in PCs that may spend one hour gaming and the next several hours rendering, compiling, editing video or running another heavily threaded workload.
That still does not mean the CPU requires a flagship motherboard.
AMD supports the 9950X3D on multiple AM5 chipset families, including B650, B850, X670, X870 and X870E. A good board from any of those families can run the processor when it has the required BIOS support.
The reason to pay more on this page is therefore not simply “because it is a Ryzen 9.” It is because your complete workstation needs more NVMe drives, 10Gb networking, USB4, additional PCIe expansion or other connectivity.
