The Radeon RX 9070 GRE and RX 9070 look much closer on the shelf than they perform in demanding games.
Both are RDNA 4 Radeon cards. Both provide the same current AMD gaming feature family. Both use a full PCIe 5.0 x16 interface. And AMD gives both the same 220W reference board-power rating.
But the GRE loses:
- 14% of the Compute Units,
- 25% of the VRAM capacity,
- 25% of the memory-bus width,
- 25% of the Infinity Cache,
- and roughly one-third of the memory bandwidth.
That turns what looks like a small step down into roughly a 15–17% real gaming performance gap on average.
So this comparison is not really about whether the RX 9070 is better. It is.
The useful question is: how much more should you pay for it?

The clocks are the trap in the spec sheet
The GRE actually has the higher official clock speeds.
That can make the two cards look much closer than they really are.
But the RX 9070 keeps more active GPU resources and, more importantly, a much stronger memory subsystem.
Real benchmarks therefore matter more than comparing boost clocks.
The memory subsystem is the biggest technical difference
The Compute Unit cut gets most of the attention, but the memory changes are arguably more important.
The GRE drops from:
- 16GB → 12GB,
- 256-bit → 192-bit,
- 20Gbps → 18Gbps,
- 640GB/s → 432GB/s,

That is a very large reduction in the amount of data the GPU can keep close and move quickly.
The RX 9070 therefore does not merely have four more gigabytes. It has a much wider and faster memory path feeding its GPU.

VRAM capacity matters, but bandwidth and cache matter too.

A 15–16% gap is large enough to:
- push a 70fps result toward 80fps,
- give you more room for Ultra settings,
- reduce your dependence on aggressive upscaling,
- or extend the useful life of the card before settings need to come down.
What about 1440p high-refresh competitive gaming?
Both cards can be excellent for lighter competitive games.
At very high frame rates, your CPU can become the limiting factor before either GPU reaches its full theoretical advantage.
That makes the RX 9070’s extra performance less valuable if:

- use competitive settings,

This is where I would stop trying to save money with the GRE.
TechSpot found the regular RX 9070 roughly 17% faster at 4K across its 15-game raster suite.
At the same time, 4K places more pressure on:
- VRAM capacity,
- memory bandwidth,
- cache,
- and raw GPU performance.
Those happen to be exactly the areas where the GRE is cut down.
For a dedicated 4K gaming PC, choose the RX 9070
The GRE can run games at 4K, especially with optimized settings and FSR.
But if 4K is your normal target rather than an occasional experiment, the 16GB RX 9070 is the much cleaner choice between these two.
Ray tracing: the RX 9070 pulls further ahead
Both cards use RDNA 4 and its current ray-tracing hardware.
The GRE does not lose a special software feature. It simply has less hardware and a weaker memory system.
TechSpot’s seven-game ray-tracing average found the GRE roughly:
- 17% slower at 1440p,
- 22% slower at 4K.
ComputerBase’s refreshed 2026 WQHD suite finds a smaller but still meaningful 15% difference.
The exact size therefore changes with the games in the suite, but the direction is very consistent.
Why some RT games make the gap much larger
Ray tracing raises memory pressure as well as GPU load.
That matters when one card has:
- 12GB instead of 16GB,
- a 192-bit rather than 256-bit bus,
- and 432GB/s rather than 640GB/s of bandwidth.
Earlier ComputerBase testing of the same GRE hardware demonstrated that VRAM-sensitive RT workloads can create much larger gaps than the current average.
So I would not buy the GRE expecting it to age as well as the RX 9070 for heavy ray tracing.
Is 12GB VRAM enough in 2026?
For normal 1440p raster gaming: usually, yes.
That is important because it is easy to turn a useful difference into an exaggerated claim.
The RX 9070 GRE is not suddenly a bad GPU because it has 12GB.
The problem is headroom.
Twelve gigabytes gives you less margin for:
- very high-resolution texture packs,
- ray tracing,
- 1440p ultrawide,
- 4K,
- poorly optimized future games,
- and keeping the card for several years.
12GB is not the reason to reject the GRE at any price
It is the reason the GRE needs to be meaningfully cheaper than the 16GB RX 9070.
At a large discount, the compromise is reasonable. At a tiny discount, it is not.
The awkward part: RX 9060 XT can have more VRAM than the GRE
AMD also sells a 16GB version of the RX 9060 XT.
That means the lower-tier card can technically have 4GB more VRAM than the RX 9070 GRE.
Do not conclude that the RX 9060 XT is therefore faster. It is not.
The GRE has much more GPU performance.
The unusual memory configuration simply reinforces why VRAM capacity and GPU speed are separate specifications.

There is no reason to pay extra for the RX 9070 because you think it unlocks a different Radeon software feature set.
Both cards belong to RDNA 4 and support AMD’s current RX 9000-series gaming technology family, including:

No.
Both GPUs use a PCIe 5.0 x16 interface, but PCI Express is backward compatible.
A normal PCIe 4.0 x16 graphics slot provides ample bandwidth for this performance class.

Which one is better for 1440p ultrawide?
I lean toward the RX 9070.
3440 × 1440 pushes substantially more pixels than normal 2560 × 1440, while modern high-resolution textures and RT can increase memory pressure.
ComputerBase’s current pricing/performance data shows both GPUs can offer very similar raster FPS per euro at this resolution, but it specifically warns that 12GB is not especially comfortable for every ultrawide workload.
If the RX 9070 premium is reasonable, its 16GB and wider memory system are worthwhile here.
The price gap matters more than MSRP
Launch prices are useful historical context, but they are not how you should choose a GPU months later.
The RX 9070 GRE launched globally at a price designed to place it between the RX 9060 XT and RX 9070.
The problem is that real RX 9070 pricing can move independently.
Some weeks the two cards are close enough that the GRE makes little sense. Other weeks the regular RX 9070 jumps enough for the GRE to become a legitimate value option.

Should you upgrade from an RX 7900 GRE?
I would generally not buy an RX 9070 GRE as an upgrade from the RX 7900 GRE.
TechSpot’s current average found essentially no generational gain in normal raster performance.
You would gain RDNA 4’s newer feature set and better RT behavior in some games, but not enough raw raster performance to make this a compelling full-price upgrade.
The standard RX 9070 is a more meaningful move, although even there I would check whether a higher tier is needed to justify replacing a still-capable 7900 GRE.

The RX 9070 GRE is a good graphics card trapped in a very price-sensitive position.
At 1440p it is fast, its 12GB of VRAM is still workable, and it has the same current RDNA 4 software feature family as the RX 9070.
But the standard RX 9070 gives you:

- a larger RT advantage in demanding workloads,
- 16GB instead of 12GB,

If the RX 9070 costs no more than about 15% extra, buy the RX 9070.

The key is to compare actual partner-card prices rather than GPU names or launch MSRPs.
