A gaming motherboard should not be judged by how expensive its chipset is or how many power stages appear on the box.
Once the motherboard correctly supports the processor, graphics card and memory, the features that usually matter more are storage layout, networking, USB, BIOS recovery, troubleshooting features and whether everything physically fits your build.

What actually makes a motherboard good for gaming?
A motherboard does not render game frames in the same way the graphics card does.
Once a board properly supports the CPU, graphics card and memory, paying substantially more for the motherboard usually produces diminishing gaming returns.
The motherboard instead determines how easy the PC is to build, how many SSDs and add-in cards you can install, what networking and USB connections are available, and how easily you can recover from BIOS or hardware problems.
The practical gaming motherboard checklist
- Correct socket and CPU support
- A full-bandwidth primary GPU slot
- Enough M.2 slots for your game library
- Appropriate DDR5 / EXPO or XMP support
- Enough USB for your peripherals
- 2.5GbE or faster networking if useful
- BIOS Flashback and basic diagnostic LEDs
- The correct form factor for the case
Everything beyond that should solve a requirement you can actually name.
AMD AM5 vs Intel LGA1851 for a gaming motherboard
AMD AM5
B850 is the chipset I would start with for most current gaming builds.
Move to X870 when USB4 or a particular high-speed I/O configuration is genuinely useful.
Intel LGA1851
B860 is the sensible starting point if you will run the CPU at normal settings while still using XMP memory.
Move to Z890 for IA/BCLK overclocking, Intel 200S Boost or heavier expansion.
The CPU decision should come before the motherboard decision. Do not choose an inferior CPU for your games simply because you prefer a particular motherboard.

The main feature you are giving up compared with something like an X870 Tomahawk is USB4.

One expansion detail to know
M2_3 shares bandwidth with the lower PCIe expansion slot. If you intend to populate almost every connector, check MSI’s lane-sharing table before finalizing the build.

The B860 Tomahawk is the Intel equivalent of the same idea: buy the connectivity you need rather than paying automatically for the highest chipset.
The primary GPU connection runs at PCIe 5.0 x16.
Storage consists of three M.2 positions. The first is CPU-connected Gen5 x4 while the other two are chipset-connected Gen4 x4.
Networking is particularly strong: Intel Killer 5Gb Ethernet plus Wi-Fi 7.
Rear connectivity includes a 40Gbps Thunderbolt 4 Type-C port, multiple 10Gbps USB connections and optical audio.
B860 also supports DDR5 memory overclocking and Intel XMP.
What it does not provide is Intel’s official IA/CPU and BCLK overclocking capability.
If you normally install the CPU, enable XMP and play games, that can be a very reasonable compromise.
Buy it if: you want a feature-rich Intel gaming system and do not plan to manually overclock the processor.
Skip it if: CPU/BCLK tuning or Intel 200S Boost is specifically part of the reason you bought an unlocked processor.
3. ASUS TUF GAMING B850M-PLUS WIFI7
Micro-ATX is often overlooked in gaming builds even though it can provide almost everything a one-GPU PC actually needs.
The TUF B850M-PLUS WiFi7 is a good example.
With Ryzen 9000 or Ryzen 7000 processors, the primary graphics slot operates at PCIe 5.0 x16.
There are three M.2 positions: one CPU-connected Gen5 x4 slot, another CPU-connected Gen4 x4 position and a chipset-connected Gen4 x4 connection.
ASUS also gives the board four SATA ports.
Rear connectivity is unusually generous for Micro-ATX: twelve USB ports in total, including a 20Gbps Type-C port and three 10Gbps Type-A connections.
Networking is 2.5Gb Ethernet plus Wi-Fi 7.
ASUS uses an ALC1220P audio implementation and includes BIOS FlashBack, Clear CMOS and Q-LED diagnostics.
Those are practical gaming-build features rather than cosmetic reasons to spend more.

4. ASUS ROG Strix B850-I Gaming WiFi
Mini-ITX should be chosen because you want a small PC, not because the motherboard itself looks more premium.
Within its 170mm-square layout, the ROG Strix B850-I still provides a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot with Ryzen 9000 and 7000 CPUs.
Both onboard M.2 positions can operate at PCIe 5.0 x4 with those processors.
Rear I/O is also unusually strong for a small board: one 20Gbps Type-C port, five 10Gbps USB connections, 2.5Gb Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7.
ASUS uses its SupremeFX ALC4080 audio implementation with a Savitech headphone amplifier and optical S/PDIF.
The unavoidable compromises are physical.
You get two DDR5 DIMM slots, two M.2 positions, two SATA ports and one main PCIe expansion slot.
That is exactly what you want in a carefully planned SFF gaming PC and unnecessarily restrictive in a large tower.
Buy it if: small-form-factor size is one of the defining goals of the build.
Skip it if: your case accepts Micro-ATX or ATX and you want easier future storage, memory and expansion upgrades.
Do gamers need X870, X870E or Z890?
B850
My default AMD gaming chipset. It already supports CPU and EXPO overclocking plus Gen5 NVMe.
X870
Pay more when USB4 or the exact board’s additional high-speed connectivity matters.
B860
My default Intel gaming chipset when you want XMP but do not need manual CPU/BCLK overclocking.
Z890
Choose it for Intel CPU/BCLK tuning, 200S Boost or heavier expansion—not merely because it is the higher tier.
Does a better motherboard increase FPS?
Usually not in the way a better CPU or GPU does.
A poor or unsuitable motherboard can certainly create problems: inadequate power delivery, incorrect memory support, thermal issues or reduced PCIe connectivity can hold a system back.
But once the board is properly supporting the hardware, moving from a competent B850 board to an expensive X870E model does not automatically create a meaningful frame-rate increase.
Do not sacrifice the GPU for a motherboard upgrade
If buying the more expensive motherboard forces you into a slower graphics card, the expensive motherboard is usually the wrong gaming decision.
Do you need PCIe 5.0 for a gaming graphics card?
PCIe generation should be treated as one part of the complete platform rather than a reason to buy a motherboard by itself.
All four recommendations here provide a Gen5-capable primary graphics connection with the appropriate processor.
More important is making sure the GPU receives the expected lane width for your particular CPU and motherboard configuration.

If you use USB headphones, HDMI audio, an external DAC or an audio interface, onboard audio quality becomes much less important.
BIOS Flashback and debug LEDs are worth prioritizing
These features are not glamorous, but they are valuable the first time a new build refuses to POST.

I would rather have useful recovery and diagnostic features than pay extra for decorative heatsink mass or RGB that changes nothing about the build.
ATX vs Micro-ATX vs Mini-ITX for gaming
ATX
Best default when your case has room. Easier expansion and usually the least compromised layout.
Micro-ATX
Often the best value/size compromise for a one-GPU gaming PC.
Mini-ITX
Choose it because you want a small PC. Expect fewer RAM, M.2, SATA and expansion options.
Which gaming motherboard should you buy for your CPU?
Ryzen 7 9800X3D / 9850X3D
Start with B850. You do not need X870E simply because the CPU is a high-end gaming part.
Ryzen 9 gaming build
B850 or X870 can still be completely appropriate. Buy X870E only when the rest of the PC needs its additional expansion.
Core Ultra 5 250K Plus
B860 is the natural starting point. Move to Z890 for CPU tuning or Intel 200S Boost.
Core Ultra 7 270K Plus
B860 remains valid at normal CPU settings; Z890 is easier to justify if you specifically want its unlocked tuning features.

Need USB4 on AMD?

It makes more sense when USB4 peripherals are part of the build, not because X870 automatically increases FPS.
Want Intel CPU overclocking?
Move to Z890.
