1440p is not one performance target.
A 1440p 60Hz monitor, a 165Hz gaming display and a 240Hz OLED can all have the same 2560 × 1440 resolution while needing completely different graphics-card performance.
That is why there is no single GPU that is automatically “the 1440p card.”
Your best choice depends on:
- your monitor’s refresh rate,
- the games you actually play,
- whether you use ray tracing,
- whether you are comfortable using FSR or DLSS,
- your CPU,
- and the live price gap between adjacent GPUs.

Do not read the refresh-rate column as an FPS guarantee
A 240Hz recommendation does not mean a GPU will produce 240 FPS at Ultra settings in every AAA game.
It means that performance tier makes more sense when your monitor can display higher frame rates and you are willing to tune settings, use quality upscaling or play lighter competitive games.
How much GPU do you actually need for 1440p?
1440p 60–100Hz
You do not need an RX 9070 XT.
For a normal 60–100Hz display, the RX 9060 XT 16GB is a very sensible starting point.
A PNY RTX 5060 Ti 16GB can also make sense when the price difference is small and you care about NVIDIA’s software stack.
1440p 144Hz or 165Hz
This is the target where I would buy the RX 9070.
It has enough performance headroom that you do not need to immediately turn every demanding setting down, while 16GB gives it a healthier long-term memory configuration.
1440p 180–240Hz
Move toward the RX 9070 XT, especially if you play a mix of:
- competitive games,
- GPU-heavy shooters,
- AAA games with optimized settings,
- or 3440 × 1440 ultrawide.
At this level, your CPU also becomes increasingly important.

1. ASRock RX 9070 Challenger 16GB — best 1440p GPU overall
This is the GPU I would put in most new 1440p gaming builds today.
The strongest reason is not a single specification. It is where the RX 9070 lands between the cheaper 9060 XT-class cards and the more power-hungry 9070 XT.
In TechSpot’s 23-game comparison , the RX 9070 averaged 13% more performance than the RTX 5070 at native 1440p.
The same 13% advantage remained when comparing equivalent Quality, Balanced and Performance upscaling modes.
The 16GB memory configuration is another advantage
AMD specifies the RX 9070 with 16GB GDDR6, a 256-bit bus, 640GB/s memory bandwidth and 220W Typical Board Power .
That is a particularly balanced setup for 1440p: enough VRAM headroom without paying for a 4K flagship-class GPU.
Why the ASRock Challenger?
ASRock lists this model at 290 × 123 × 51mm, with two 8-pin PCIe power connectors and a 700W PSU recommendation .
It is not tiny, but it avoids the giant cooler and luxury-card pricing that can destroy the value argument of the GPU itself.
My RX 9070 rule
Buy it for most 1440p 144–165Hz systems.
Before checkout, compare it with the RX 9070 XT.
If the XT costs no more than roughly 15% extra, the faster card deserves serious consideration.

2. Sapphire PULSE RX 9060 XT OC 16GB — best budget 1440p GPU
This is the lowest GPU tier in the guide that I would confidently build a new 1440p gaming system around.
That does not mean it will run every new AAA game at native 1440p Ultra well above 100 FPS.
It means the card gives you enough performance, VRAM and current feature support to make sensible 1440p compromises.
TechSpot’s launch testing found the RX 9060 XT 16GB essentially tied with the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB at 1440p across its broader launch suite .
In a later 15-game sample containing titles supporting both DLSS and FSR, the GeForce was about 9% faster, but TechSpot still favored the Radeon when its price premium was substantially lower.
Why I specifically recommend 16GB
There are both 8GB and 16GB RX 9060 XT models.
For a new 1440p build, buy the 16GB card.
This is not because every current game requires more than 8GB. It is because 1440p, high-resolution textures, ray tracing and several years of future games give you more opportunities to run into the smaller memory buffer.
The Sapphire PULSE is easy to build around
Sapphire specifies the card at 170W board power, one 8-pin connector and roughly 240mm in length .
That makes it considerably easier to cool, power and fit than the higher-end recommendations here.

Who should buy it?
- You use a 1440p 60–100Hz display.
- You are willing to use High instead of Ultra settings in demanding games.
- You want 16GB without RX 9070 pricing.
- You prefer lower heat and power draw.
- You are upgrading from an older mainstream GPU.
3. Sapphire PULSE RX 9070 GRE 12GB — best middle option when heavily discounted
The RX 9070 GRE is the awkward middle child of this market.
That can make it either an excellent purchase or completely pointless.
ComputerBase’s current WQHD testing found the GRE about 30% faster than the RX 9060 XT but 15% slower than the RX 9070 in rasterized 1440p gaming .
The RT result was remarkably similar: about 29% faster than the 9060 XT and 15% behind the RX 9070.
That gives us a very useful price rule.
RX 9070 GRE price rule
GRE is less than 10% cheaper than RX 9070: buy the RX 9070.
GRE is around 15% cheaper: the decision becomes reasonable either way.
GRE is 20%+ cheaper: the GRE becomes a strong 1440p value play.
The compromise is not only VRAM capacity
The Sapphire PULSE GRE uses 12GB GDDR6 on a 192-bit interface .
The full RX 9070 increases that to 16GB and a 256-bit memory interface.
Twelve gigabytes is not automatically inadequate for 1440p.
But if the cards cost almost the same, there is little reason to volunteer for:
- less raw GPU performance,
- 4GB less VRAM,
- a narrower memory bus,
- and less long-term headroom.

4. PNY RTX 5060 Ti OC 16GB — best NVIDIA 16GB option at the lower tier
The RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is not the value winner by default.
It is the alternative for someone who wants NVIDIA’s feature set without stepping all the way up to an RTX 5070.
PNY specifies this Overclocked Dual Fan model with 16GB GDDR7, 180W maximum power, one 8-pin input, a 600W recommended system PSU and a 245mm two-slot design .
Performance is close enough that price decides it
TechSpot’s 15-game upscaling comparison found the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB about 9% faster at native 1440p than the RX 9060 XT 16GB , with roughly the same margin using equivalent upscaling modes.
That is useful, but it does not justify an unlimited premium.
RX 9060 XT 16GB vs RTX 5060 Ti 16GB
If the RTX 5060 Ti is only around 5–10% more, the NVIDIA features may justify paying extra.
If the premium is around 20% or more, the RX 9060 XT normally gives you better gaming value.

Avoid the 8GB version for this guide
This is one of the most important model-name traps in the current market.
There is also an RTX 5060 Ti 8GB.
Tom’s Hardware measured the 8GB card 18% slower overall at 1440p Ultra than the 16GB version, with a 39.6% deficit across its ray-tracing subset .
If this is a new 1440p purchase, make sure the listing explicitly says 16GB.
5. ZOTAC RTX 5070 Twin Edge OC 12GB — best NVIDIA / compact 1440p pick
The RTX 5070 loses the pure raster-value comparison to the RX 9070, but there are still several good reasons to buy it.
The first is NVIDIA’s feature ecosystem.
The second is physical size.
ZOTAC’s Twin Edge OC is only 241.5 × 120.1 × 40.6mm, two slots thick, with a 250W power rating and 650W recommended PSU .
That is substantially easier to fit than many high-end triple-fan cards.
How does it compare with RX 9070?
In TechSpot’s 23-game test, the RX 9070 was 13% faster at native 1440p.
So if both cost roughly the same, I would choose Radeon for conventional gaming performance.
Reasons to choose RTX 5070 anyway
- stronger ray tracing in many games,
- NVIDIA DLSS,
- CUDA and OptiX,
- NVIDIA Studio workflows,
- creator or AI applications that favor GeForce,
- or its compact two-slot form factor.
What about DLSS 5?
NVIDIA launched DLSS 5 on September 3, 2026 for RTX 50-series GPUs.
But support is still extremely limited: NBA 2K27 was the debut implementation.
So DLSS 5 is a forward-looking feature, not something I would use to justify paying a huge premium today.
RTX 5070 price rule
At roughly the same price as RX 9070: buy RX 9070 for normal gaming.
Buy RTX 5070 when NVIDIA’s RT/software/creator advantages actually matter to you, or when the GeForce is meaningfully cheaper.

6. ASRock RX 9070 XT Challenger 16GB — best high-refresh 1440p GPU
For a normal 1440p 60–144Hz monitor, you probably do not need this card.
For a 165Hz, 180Hz, 240Hz or 3440 × 1440 ultrawide display, it becomes much easier to justify.
TechSpot’s current 52-game RX 9070 vs RX 9070 XT benchmark puts the XT about 12% faster at 1440p on average.
That performance is only worth a sensible premium
XT costs 0–10% more than RX 9070: buy the XT.
XT costs 10–15% more: still a good upgrade, especially for ultrawide or high refresh.
XT costs substantially more than 15% extra: the RX 9070 normally gives better value.
Power is the real tradeoff
AMD rates the RX 9070 XT at 304W Typical Board Power , versus 220W for the standard RX 9070.
That means the extra performance also brings:
- more heat,
- higher PSU demand,
- and potentially more fan noise.
ASRock’s Challenger keeps the hardware relatively straightforward
ASRock specifies this model at 290 × 123 × 56mm, 2.8 slots, two 8-pin power connectors and a 750W minimum PSU .

What about the RTX 5070 Ti?
The RTX 5070 Ti is excellent at 1440p.
The problem is that for most 1440p gamers, it is also where this guide starts drifting into 4K-GPU money.
I would choose it over the RX 9070 XT when:
- heavy ray tracing is central to the games you play,
- path tracing matters,
- you need CUDA or OptiX,
- you use Blender or other NVIDIA-favored creator applications,
- or its current price has moved unusually close to the RX 9070 XT.
For conventional 1440p raster gaming, the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT generally make more financial sense.

What about RX 7800 XT and RX 7900 XTX?
These were the top two recommendations in the old version of this page.
They are no longer where I would begin a new 2026 buyer guide.
RX 7800 XT
It can still be an excellent 1440p GPU if remaining stock is heavily discounted.
But the RX 9070 family gives you:
- newer RDNA 4 architecture,
- better ray tracing,
- newer Radeon ML features,
- and substantially more performance at the higher tiers.
Treat the 7800 XT as a clearance deal, not the default recommendation.
RX 7900 XTX
This is fundamentally a high-end 4K-class graphics card.
Buying one specifically for normal 1440p gaming makes little sense unless leftover stock is unusually cheap.
The old article’s suggestion that it could be your 1440p card for the next decade is not something I would promise.
How much VRAM do you need for 1440p in 2026?
There is no magic capacity where a card instantly becomes “future-proof.”
My practical view is:

Do not buy by VRAM capacity alone
A slower 16GB GPU does not automatically beat a faster 12GB GPU.
VRAM is one part of the package alongside:
- GPU performance,
- memory bandwidth,
- ray tracing,
- upscaling quality,
- power,
- and price.
Is a 128-bit memory bus bad for 1440p?
No.
This is another rule I would remove from the old page.
The previous article said a 1440p GPU should have more than a 128-bit bus.
That is too simplistic.
The actual performance of the memory subsystem depends on:
- memory speed,
- compression,
- cache,
- architecture,
- and the workload.
For example, the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB uses a 128-bit GDDR7 interface and is still a legitimate 1440p GPU.
Judge the complete card using actual game performance, not bus width in isolation.
Ray tracing changes the recommendations
If ray tracing is a major part of your buying decision, NVIDIA becomes more competitive.
Tom’s current GPU hierarchy places cards around the RTX 5070 / RX 9070 tier as reasonable 1440p RT options, with the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT offering more headroom.
Favor Radeon
RX 9060 XT 16GB, RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT generally provide the cleaner current value story.
Favor GeForce when useful
RTX 5060 Ti 16GB, RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti gain value when DLSS, CUDA, OptiX or heavier RT workloads are important.
FSR Redstone vs DLSS
Both ecosystems have moved well beyond simple spatial upscaling.
AMD Radeon RX 9000
AMD’s current FSR “Redstone” family includes ML-based upscaling, ML frame generation and ray-regeneration technology on supported RX 9000-series hardware.
NVIDIA RTX 50
RTX 50-series cards have NVIDIA’s current DLSS stack, including Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and Multi Frame Generation.
DLSS 5 has also now launched, but support is only beginning to appear.
Do not choose a GPU from frame-generation multipliers
Frame generation can make motion look much smoother, but it does not replace a healthy base frame rate.
For a 1440p system, I would rather start with a card that already delivers a strong native or quality-upscaled result than rely on generated frames to rescue a weak underlying experience.
1440p ultrawide is not normal 1440p
A 3440 × 1440 monitor renders about 34% more pixels than standard 2560 × 1440.
That makes ultrawide noticeably more demanding.
My rough starting points become:
- RX 9070 for a normal high-refresh ultrawide build,
- RX 9070 XT when you want more room for high settings and heavier games,
- RTX 5070 when NVIDIA features are more important than raster value.

Your CPU matters more as refresh rate rises
A GPU capable of 150–200 FPS needs a CPU capable of preparing frames at a similar pace.
That is why the CPU matters more for:
- 240Hz esports,
- CPU-heavy strategy games,
- simulation games,
- large multiplayer environments,
- and reduced-quality competitive settings.
It matters less when:
- the game is strongly GPU-bound,
- you use Ultra settings,
- ray tracing is enabled,
- or you move to ultrawide/4K.

Do you need PCIe 5.0?
No.
A good PCIe 4.0 x16 motherboard remains entirely appropriate for these GPUs.
PCI Express generations are backward compatible, so you should not replace an otherwise good motherboard merely because the graphics-card specification lists PCIe 5.0.

RX 9070 XT 16GB
The best fit when extra GPU headroom actually has somewhere useful to go. Make sure the CPU can support your intended frame rate.

- Buying for the resolution but ignoring refresh rate. A 60Hz screen and a 240Hz screen do not need the same GPU.
- Buying the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB by mistake. For this guide, I want the 16GB version.
- Paying almost RX 9070 money for an RX 9070 GRE. The GRE needs a meaningful discount to make sense.

For most buyers, I would begin with the RX 9070 and work outward.
If it costs too much, move down toward the RX 9060 XT 16GB or a genuinely discounted GRE.
If you have a faster monitor and the XT costs no more than about 15% extra, move up to RX 9070 XT.
And if NVIDIA-specific features matter more than raw raster value, look at the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or RTX 5070 instead.
The goal is not buying the fastest GPU you can afford.
It is buying the GPU whose performance, features and price actually match your 1440p setup.
