This motherboard will surprise you the more you look at its features because its unassuming design makes it seem like a bottom-of-the-barrel choice for penny pinchers.

The only thing that could potentially hold this motherboard back is its extremely modest VRM configuration which is just a 4+2-phase setup. Even then, I wouldn’t worry about it since it can easily handle even the Ryzen 5 5800X3D which is the best gaming CPU on the AM4 socket. I just wouldn’t put anything more demanding, like the 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X. Beyond that, it has a decent heatsink that ensures that the CPU never throttles because the VRMs are always under 70 degrees Celcius.

The reason why MSI configured the PRO B550M-VC WIFI like that is because it is actually a business-grade motherboard! Thanks to being a business-grade motherboard the focus is solely on having as many features as possible while toning down the VRM setup because no one expects to overclock on a standard office motherboard.

That also explains the muted black aesthetics of the motherboard that help it blend in any PC.

It has 4 DDR4 RAM slots instead of the usual 2 slots on other budget boards and it can handle a total of 128 GB RAM with MSI claiming that the PRO B550M-VC WIFI can overclock the RAM to 4400 MHz.

This is strange to me as most manufacturers usually only include a couple of full-sized PCIe slots, while the rest are x1 or x4 slots, yet, here we see MSI letting all the PCIe slots be full-sized x16 slots.

If we take a look at some of the budget alternatives, it is useless to consider any A320, A520, or B450 board since these chipsets lack plenty of features like overclocking and PCIe 4.0 support.

This leaves us with other B550 boards but the only board that comes close to offering the same level of features as the MSI PRO B550M-VC WIFI is the GIGABYTE B550 UD AC. This is an excellent alternative for those looking for an ATX board with similar features as the MSI PRO B550M-VC WIFI. But it costs significantly more and being larger means that it is not versatile enough to be used in smaller Micro ATX cases.

The board is complete with all the necessities and on top of that it has an excellent VRM design (16+2+1 Phase at 60A) so running even the Ryzen 9 7950X at high clocks won’t be an issue. 

A rather rare feature of the Steel Legend is its 2 ethernet ports, one being 1Gb and the other 2Gb. This board also comes with an insane number of USB ports – I counted a total of 12 in the back with support for 5 more in the front. Perhaps my favorite feature of this motherboard is the inclusion of a graphics card holder. This included holder is perfect for giant GPUs so even if you plan to upgrade in the future to an RX 7900 XTX or even the GeForce RTX 4090 it will not sag. I wish more vendors included this nowadays.

This is truly the best value-seekers board for mid-range Ryzen 7000 processors. Reliable power delivery, sturdy board design, overloaded with features, and an excellent price to match.

For around the price of the ASRock X670E Steel Legend, the other boards I considered that offer a similar experience are the Gigabyte X670 Gaming X AX and the MSI Pro X670-P WiFi. I also saw a handful of boards from Asus and ASRock themselves.

In the end, I went with the ASRock X670E Steel Legend over the other affordable X670 boards. All of these boards can comfortably supply power to the Radeon RX 6800 and the top-tier ryzen 9 cpus to run at higher clocks, but it came down to features. Unlike the Steel Legend, most boards in this price range don’t offer Gen 5 support on the x16 slot. All in all, I needed a board that would yield the most value.

At the end I really wanted to recommend the Gigabyte X670 Gaming X AX however right now, the price of the Steel Legend is just $30 more than the Gaming X and it overshadows the Gaming X in terms of features.

The more I learned about this board, the more I realized that not only is the Gigabyte Gaming X AX an excellent choice for gamers and overclocking enthusiasts thanks to its beefy VRMs, its feature set makes it an underdog for workstation builds as well. 

Gigabyte has been consistent in offering a lot USB type-A ports. The balanced set of I/O  is no different this time either and if you have plenty of devices, you will have no issues finding a free port whatsoever.

At the rear, we see 4 USB 2.0 ports (which are perfect for peripherals like a mouse, a keyboard, a webcam, etc), 2 USB 3.2 Gen 2 and 3 USB 3.2 Gen 1 type-A ports, a USB 3.2 Gen2x2 type-C port, and 2 audio jacks with 7.1 surround sound support including an S/PDIF jack. We also have a 2.5 gigabit ethernet port, WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support, an HDMI 2.1 port, and a DisplayPort 1.4 port.

I am disappointed that the BIOS flash button is not in the rear I/O but instead has been moved on the board itself but this is still much better than not having any BIOS flash button at all. Also, once I started inspecting the front I/O, I was delighted to see that there is a Thunderbolt header for high-speed devices and multiple displays over a single port.

What really impressed me though is that while this is supposed to be a “gaming” board, there are 4 M.2 PCIe 4.0 slots and 6 SATA III ports, so I realized that this is a great workstation motherboard too.

If we talk about design, then Gigabyte has settled for a rather boring grey aesthetic. It is odd to see that a motherboard targeted towards gamers does not look as appealing as it should be.

I’ve seen the Aorus Elite and Aorus Master series of motherboards so I know that Gigabyte is definitely capable of making attractive motherboards. Still, it is definitely not the worst-looking motherboard and might just be exactly what you need. It can definitely work for both gaming and workstation builds without a doubt.

Regardless of the design, with the port selection, storage options, and Thunderbolt support, I can also easily recommend this board to professional video editors.

Compared to other moderately priced Z790 motherboards, it is easy to see why the Gigabyte Z790 Gaming X AX stands out. If we take a look at all of the Z790 motherboards under the $200 mark, we see that they neither have built-in WiFi nor DDR5. They may have decent VRMs, but without DDR5 or WiFi, it will be hard for these motherboards to keep up in the long future.

The only board that is pretty much identical to the Gigabyte Z790 Gaming X AX is the ASUS TUF Gaming Z790-Plus WiFI – a fantastic board that I regularly recommend. However, the Gigabyte Z790 Gaming X AX is available widely at a much lower price so overall it’s a better buy.

MSI’s MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI is another excellent option, but it is even more expensive than the ASUS TUF Gaming and it does not support Thunderbolt.

In conclusion, if you are looking to build a high-end Intel-based PC to pair with the RX 6800, then the Gigabyte Z790 Gaming X AX is a solid option for now and for the foreseeable future. You get everything you could possibly need in an affordable package that suits both gamers and professionals alike.

While the RX 6700 XT offers the best value out of any graphics card right now, the RX 6800 makes the most sense and offers a more complete package in every way. Similarly, the Gigabyte B760 AORUS Elite AX is everything that you could ask for in a board.

It is a slightly better level than all H610, B660, and most other B760 boards.

Starting with the VRM, it is a 12+1+1-phase VRM configuration which is much more powerful than what the majority of other B760 boards offer.

Even though it is technically fine to go with a board with a weaker VRM, the 12-phases open up the potential to power any LGA 1700 CPU. In fact, this board is ready to even take on a stock Intel Core i9 14900K so anything else is going to be very easy for this board to power. My suggestion for the best CPU pair for this board though and the Radeon RX 6800 is an Intel Core i5 processor.

The rear I/O is very similar to other Gigabyte boards. There are 4 USB 2.0 ports (which are perfect for peripherals like a mouse, a keyboard, a webcam, etc).

We also have 1 USB 3.2 Gen 2 and 4 USB 3.2 Gen 1 type-A ports, a USB 3.2 Gen2 type-C port, and 2 audio jacks with 7.1 surround sound support including an S/PDIF jack. Additionally there is a 2.5 gigabit ethernet port, WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support, an HDMI 2.0 port, and a DisplayPort 1.2 port.

Moving over to the board itself, there are 3 full-sized PCIe slots. But perhaps the most disappointing part about this board is that except for the first PCIe slot, the other 2 are PCIe x1 slots even if they physically look like x16 slots. The top slot for the GPU is PCIe 4.0 and the total 3 M.2 slots are also PCIe 4.0.

This unusual PCIe slot choice is somewhat redeemed by the 4 SATA III ports and BIOS flash button on the board itself.

The design is quite uniform, unlike Gigabyte’s Gaming X series of boards. It has a much more appealing and premium aesthetic and helps fit in any build without looking out of place.

When it comes to the competition the MSI MAG B760 Tomahawk WiFi stands out as an excellent board with amazing build quality and all the features of the Gigabyte B760 Gaming X AX. It is also powered with a powerful 12-phase VRM configuration and the main PCIe x16 slot for the graphics card is running at PCIe 5.0 but the issue is that the MSI board comes at a significantly higher price which makes its value proposition really poor in contrast to Gigabyte’s. It is much better to move to a Z790 board at its price instead which will be able to offer even more features and overclocking capability.

At the same price as the Gigabyte B760 AORUS Elite AX, I strongly considered the ASRock B760 Pro RS as an alternative because it has a strong 10+1+1 phases VRM and a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot. But it does not come with a pre-installed WiFi module in its WiFi M.2 slot. It is still the best alternative, but the Gigabyte B760 AORUS Elite AX is simply a better well-rounded motherboard.
